From Virginia, UL Lafayette opens its educator MSN and its DNP
Two of UL Lafayette's online programs are open to someone living in Virginia: the Nursing Education MSN and, for master's-prepared nurses, the DNP. The nurse practitioner tracks (FNP, PMHNP and the PMHNP certificate) do not take Virginians at present, since they hold every clinical hour in Louisiana.

The educator MSN and DNP accept Virginians; the NP tracks do not

Two practicums inside the educator track
Precepted work comes late in the 40- to 43-credit Nursing Education MSN. The third semester carries NURS 544, a one-credit Advanced Clinical Practicum with a 60-hour minimum; the fourth carries NURS 557, the Nursing Education Practicum, whose 180-hour minimum spreads over precepted class, lab and clinical settings. By the 2026-27 catalog's arithmetic that is 240 hours, though an earlier web page put the figure at 300; follow the catalog.
Where a Virginian completes those hours is still an open item, because two UL Lafayette pages point different ways. The MSN overview keeps all concentration clinicals inside Louisiana; the How to Apply page mentions that restriction only under the FNP. The Nursing Education guide lays out the full plan of study.
Virginia's board and programs based elsewhere
Virginia's nursing board, which sits in the Department of Health Professions, puts two kinds of education beyond its reach: anything run by a school in another state, and anything aimed at nurses past initial licensure. Neither needs its approval, so a Louisiana school has nothing to file with it before a Virginia clinical. Its 80-percent-in-Virginia clinical hours rule and the 18VAC90-27 site approvals govern only pre-licensure programs carrying Virginia approval.
Virginia Code 54.1-3001 lets a registered nurse licensed outside Virginia, whether by a state, by DC or by a U.S. territory, and holding that license current and unrestricted, practice without Virginia licensure while enrolled in advanced professional nursing study, for the clinical work the curriculum requires and nothing more. Whether any Virginia list names UL Lafayette went unchecked in research, so confirm a Virginia practicum or residency with UL Lafayette.
Since January 2018 Virginia has been a compact state, and a multistate license from Virginia is honored in Louisiana. Virginia has yet to enact the APRN Compact. AANP files Virginia under restricted practice: the default for its NPs is a practice agreement naming a patient care team physician, and an NP can leave that arrangement after attesting to clinical experience equal to three full-time years.
Health care from Northern Virginia to Roanoke
Northern Virginia's slice of the Washington area passes three million residents, and the Richmond, Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk and Roanoke metros are the other large ones. Carilion Clinic, VCU Health, Sentara, UVA Health and Inova rank among the larger systems. Naming them maps the state; none is presented here as a UL Lafayette clinical site.
Virginia reshuffled its Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program this year. SB 405 (signed March 31, 2026) moved NPIP out of VDH, and the Virginia Nursing Workforce Center took it over; that center belongs to the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority, and its applications cover hours dated July 1, 2026 or later. Whether a preceptor qualifies depends on where the student is enrolled: it must be a Virginia nursing school run publicly or as a private nonprofit, which leaves out anyone precepting for UL Lafayette.
A doctoral residency run from Virginia
For a Virginia NP with a master's, the DNP adds 39 credits, a single yearly intake each Fall and a May 1 application date. Residency I, II and III (NURS 821, NURS 822, NURS 823) hold 420 clock hours between them, set in your specialty area and, by UL Lafayette's own wording, doable in Louisiana or your home state. Campus visits bracket the program: the DNP Orientation Intensive first, the Synthesis Project presentation last.

Could the Nursing Education practicums happen in Virginia?
That depends on how UL Lafayette reads its own pages. One page (the MSN overview) confines every concentration's clinicals to Louisiana; another (How to Apply) attaches that limit to the FNP only. Put the question to the graduate coordinator and keep the written reply before scheduling NURS 544 or NURS 557 at a Virginia school or hospital.
Does a Virginia compact license work for UL Lafayette's MSN?
Per the catalog, yes: it takes an RN license that is Louisiana-issued or multistate, and a Virginia multistate license qualifies. The online MSN page complicates things by wanting multistate holders to prove Louisiana residency. The license guide sorts the wording; confirm your case before applying.
Can my preceptor use Virginia's preceptor incentive?
No. NPIP, now run by the Virginia Nursing Workforce Center, is tied to students enrolled at Virginia nursing schools, public or private nonprofit ones, and a Louisiana program falls outside that condition whichever Virginia site hosts you.
Is UL Lafayette's online FNP open to Virginia residents?
Not at this time. For those three NP tracks, Virginia sits in the group UL Lafayette is not accepting, because the school has not determined whether they meet Virginia's educational requirements. The tracks also require Louisiana rotations and a Louisiana RN license. If you are moving south, begin with the Louisiana guide.
