The post-MSN DNP is the exception, with hours allowed in Louisiana or your home state. We search only where your program permits, as close to home as the rule allows.

The rule in UL Lafayette's words

The plainest statement sits on the School of Nursing's MSN page, which says the MSN concentrations "require that all clinical experiences be completed in the state of Louisiana." It speaks to every concentration at once, so Family Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric/Mental Health NP and Nursing Education students all fall under it.

Other UL Lafayette pages repeat the point program by program. The online MSN page sets the FNP and PMHNP hour minimum at 750 precepted hours in Louisiana, and the online page for the PMHNP Post-Master's Certificate places its 510 direct patient care hours in Louisiana too. Nothing on those pages carves out a share of hours that may be done elsewhere.

In practice the rule decides the map before anything else does. A site's specialty, schedule and preceptor only matter once it sits on the Louisiana side of the line.

Where the sources line up, and where one does not

UL Lafayette's state authorization page for online programs repeats one instruction for the MSN FNP, the MSN PMHNP and the PMHNP post-MSN certificate: clinical rotations take place in Louisiana, and students hold a Louisiana registered nurse license. That page names Louisiana and Mississippi as the states where these programs meet educational requirements and Minnesota, Tennessee and Washington as states where they do not. Students from every other listed state and territory are not being accepted, and Colorado is missing from all three lists.

The MSN How to Apply page is the outlier. It states the Louisiana-only requirement for the Family Nurse Practitioner concentration alone and is silent on the PMHNP and Nursing Education. The MSN overview, the state authorization page and the online program pages all keep NP clinicals in Louisiana, so treat the narrower wording as a conflict to confirm, not as permission, and let the graduate coordinator settle any question it raises.

Nursing Education has its own wrinkle. The state authorization page accepts Nursing Education students from Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, while the MSN overview keeps every concentration's clinicals in Louisiana. A Nursing Education student living outside Louisiana should ask the graduate coordinator where NURS 544 and NURS 557 hours can happen before planning them.

Living near the Texas or Mississippi line

The rule is about where the clinical takes place, not how long the drive is. Around Lake Charles, the Shreveport area or the parishes along the Mississippi border, a clinic in the next state can sit closer to home than one in Lafayette or Baton Rouge. For MSN and certificate students, hours at those out-of-state sites fall outside the rule however convenient the commute.

Mississippi residents are a separate case. UL Lafayette lists Mississippi beside Louisiana as a state where its FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate programs meet educational requirements, so a Mississippi address does not rule out those tracks. The clinical hours still happen in Louisiana, and the authorization page still asks for a Louisiana RN license. Our Mississippi guide covers that setup.

Texas residents are not on the accepted list for the NP tracks. The authorization page groups Texas with the states where UL Lafayette has not made a determination and is not accepting students.

The Louisiana RN license that travels with the rule

The license requirement follows the location requirement, and UL Lafayette phrases it three ways. The 2026-27 catalog asks MSN applicants for a current unencumbered Louisiana or multistate RN license. The online MSN page accepts a multistate license only with proof of Louisiana residency. The state authorization page, for the FNP, PMHNP and certificate, asks for a Louisiana registered nurse license, and the certificate adds an unencumbered Louisiana APRN license on top.

Louisiana joined the Nurse Licensure Compact on July 1, 2019, so a Louisiana resident's multistate license matches the catalog's wording. A nurse whose multistate license was issued by another compact state should confirm with the graduate coordinator which version applies. The DNP's home-state option

The post-MSN DNP is written differently. UL Lafayette's Post-Masters DNP page says those clinical hours "can be completed in Louisiana or your home state," and the online DNP page places residencies in the student's specialty area of practice. No Louisiana-only rule was found for the DNP. Wherever the residency hours happen, DNP students still come to campus twice: for the DNP Orientation Intensive at the start and for the Synthesis Project presentation at the end.

That widens the map without opening every state. The DNP list on the state authorization page leaves out Kansas, Maryland, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Washington and Wyoming, while the same page's state-by-state section shows the DNP under every state. Why Louisiana preceptors are in steady demand

Keeping every MSN hour in Louisiana means UL Lafayette students draw on the same Louisiana-licensed APRNs as every other program training there. Louisiana's Board lets programs based in other states run clinicals in Louisiana once approved, and each request is due to the Board no later than six months before the offering starts. Approved out-of-state schools are a regular presence in Louisiana clinics as a result.

Capacity is capped on the preceptor side as well: Louisiana's rule puts a ceiling of two graduate APRN students on each preceptor, whatever the clinical experience. Every Acadiana parish also carries a federal shortage-area designation for both primary care and mental health, a sign of how full local practices already are.

Questions UL Lafayette students ask

Can a UL Lafayette FNP student do clinical hours in Texas?

Not in the MSN. UL Lafayette's pages keep every MSN clinical experience inside Louisiana, and its state authorization page ties the FNP, PMHNP and certificate to clinical rotations in Louisiana. A Texas clinic closer to home does not count. For students near the Sabine River, we match on the Louisiana side, around Lake Charles and the rest of Southwest Louisiana.

Can I live in Mississippi and enroll in a UL Lafayette NP track?

UL Lafayette's state authorization page lists Mississippi, with Louisiana, as a state where its FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate programs meet educational requirements. The clinical hours still happen in Louisiana, and the same page asks for a Louisiana RN license. Confirm the license wording with the graduate coordinator before you apply.

Can DNP residency hours be done at an agency in my home state?

UL Lafayette allows DNP clinical hours in Louisiana or your home state, with residencies in your specialty area of practice. Your Synthesis Project committee also includes an approved mentor from the agency where you plan to implement the project, so the site has to fit the project. Check your state against the DNP list first, since six states are missing from it.

Is Colorado accepted for UL Lafayette's NP programs?

Colorado does not appear in any category on UL Lafayette's state authorization page for the FNP, PMHNP or certificate, so it is neither listed as accepted nor as excluded. Treat it as not accepted unless UL Lafayette's Online Programs and Enrollment office tells you otherwise, and remember the clinical hours would still need to be in Louisiana.

Do online MSN students have to live in Louisiana?

UL Lafayette does not say every MSN student must live in Louisiana. Its online MSN page accepts a multistate license only with proof of Louisiana residency, and the state authorization page accepts Mississippi residents for the NP tracks and eight states for Nursing Education. Where you live and where your clinical hours happen are separate questions, and the hours stay in Louisiana.
