A single adult-care practicum near Lafayette at a site that already holds a contract is a smaller job than three psychiatric practicums in a rural parish with a term starting in five weeks. Each UL Lafayette program has its own clinical shape. The Family NP runs three family health practicums, each aimed at a different stage of life, and the Psychiatric/Mental Health NP runs three psychiatric ones. The PMHNP Post-Master's Certificate spreads its clinical work over four courses, opening with observation in NURS 590. Nursing Education needs two practicums in teaching settings, and the DNP runs three residencies tied to your Synthesis Project.

The population your preceptor must serve
Louisiana's Board wants the majority of your clinical time spent with an APRN licensed and certified in your population focus, so the population decides who is eligible to precept you. Adult-focused courses can usually draw on more practices. A course centered on children, adolescents and childbearing women, like NURS 582, or on older adults, like NURS 584 or the certificate's NURS 597, narrows the field to practices that see enough of those patients.
Psychiatric placements narrow it again. HRSA designates every Acadiana parish a mental health shortage area, and Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia and St. Landry carry the high-needs geographic version of that designation, so a psychiatric search from those parishes often has to cross parish lines. The wider a search reaches, the more work goes into it, and the quote reflects that.
How many preceptors your plan calls for
A quote can cover a single course or everything left in your plan of study. A whole-plan quote for the Family NP covers three practicums and often three preceptors, since each course centers on a different population. The Psychiatric/Mental Health NP plan also has three practicums, the certificate has four clinical courses, and the DNP has three residencies plus the approved agency mentor who sits on your project committee.
Keeping one preceptor across two courses can shorten the work when the practice fits both populations and Louisiana's two-student limit leaves room. We look for that fit where it exists and quote the plan the way it will actually run, course by course.
Where you live and where the hours can happen
Location sets both the size of the search and the drive you accept. Lafayette Parish is the region's population center. Evangeline, Iberia and St. Landry are nonmetro parishes where fewer clinicians cover wider ground, so a rural Acadiana search often widens to neighboring parishes or into Lafayette itself.
MSN and certificate hours stay in Louisiana, and so does the competition for preceptors: out-of-state programs approved by Louisiana's Board place their students with the same Louisiana clinicians. DNP residencies may run in your home state instead, which means working through another state's practices and health systems on their own terms. Timing and the agency contract
A start date months away leaves time to compare several preceptors and settle the file calmly. A start date weeks away squeezes the search, the credential checks and the signatures into a short window, and that concentrated effort shows in the quote. The contract matters just as much. The consortium handbook wants a current agency contract on file before any clinical day and cautions that securing a first one can stretch over weeks or months. The handbook also points students to the clinical tracking system to check for an existing university contract with a facility. A site with one in place tends to move faster; a site that needs one means earlier outreach and more coordination.

Questions UL Lafayette students ask
Is a single-practicum quote possible?
Yes. Many students start with the next course on their plan, such as NURS 582 or NURS 591, and add later practicums once the first is settled. Others want one quote for every remaining clinical course so the whole plan is mapped at once. Either way, the quote names exactly which courses and preceptors it covers.
Does bringing my own preceptor lead change the quote?
It can. A lead you bring still has to be checked against Louisiana's license and population rules and the consortium minimums, and the file still has to be built, but the search itself may be shorter. Describe the lead in your message and the quote will reflect the work that is actually left.
Why is a DNP residency outside Louisiana quoted separately?
UL Lafayette allows DNP clinical hours in Louisiana or your home state. A residency in another state means searching that state's practices and health systems, each with its own process and timeline, and finding an agency mentor who fits your Synthesis Project. That work differs from a Louisiana MSN search, so it is scoped on its own.
What details make a quote accurate?
Your program, the course number you are placing for, the term it starts, your parish or town, how far you will travel, and whether you have a lead or hope to train at your workplace.
