NP preceptors in Lafayette and Lafayette Parish
Lafayette holds more clinical capacity than anywhere else in Acadiana, and its hospitals open only through formal channels. Ochsner Lafayette General accepts requests from schools alone, through its InPlace portal, and Lourdes publishes no student process. The parish's independent practices, community clinics and health center sites are where an early, careful search does its best work, so that is where we concentrate.

What the Lafayette clinical market looks like
Lafayette Parish had an estimated 257,949 residents in 2025, and the four-parish Lafayette metro (Acadia, Lafayette, St. Martin and Vermilion) roughly 423,758. Two hospital systems anchor the city. Ochsner Lafayette General runs its main medical center, Ochsner University Hospital & Clinics and separate orthopedic and surgical hospitals. FMOL Health's Our Lady of Lourdes runs a regional medical center, a Women's & Children's Hospital and a Heart Hospital.
Most NP practicum days happen in clinics rather than on hospital floors: family and internal medicine offices, pediatric and women's health practices, outpatient psychiatric groups and health center sites. Some belong to the two systems; the rest set their own precepting decisions.
The nursing school itself sits in V.L. Wharton Hall, yet nobody in the online MSN has to live near campus. UL Lafayette asks for every MSN clinical experience to happen in Louisiana, not in Lafayette specifically, as the Louisiana-only clinicals guide explains. Lafayette matters on this page because so many students call it home.
Ochsner Lafayette General: requests come from the school
Ochsner publishes one clinical education process for outside programs, and its Lafayette hospitals follow it. Requests travel through the InPlace Network, a portal only a school representative can use; Ochsner states plainly that students will not have access. An affiliation agreement between school and system comes first, and Ochsner tells schools to allow at least four months to process any new one. It also describes placements as limited and dependent on shifting capacity.
Every program must also be approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing for clinical rotations, and a graduate student needs an RN license for the state of the clinical or a multistate compact license. UL Lafayette's Accelerated BSN rotates through Ochsner, but that is a pre-licensure partnership. For graduate NP students, Ochsner's published route is the cycle below, written for every school.

Ochsner asks students not to contact its providers, clinicians or staff about precepting. A nurse practitioner you hope to work with at an Ochsner clinic is named to your school coordinator instead.
Lourdes and the hospitals without a public route
FMOL Health's Lourdes hospitals work differently. Its website's education pages cover medical residents, a pharmacy residency, a psychology internship, continuing education and pastoral care, with nothing for nurse practitioner students from outside programs: no portal, calendar or preceptor rule.
UL Lafayette did buy the former Lourdes hospital property, which now serves as the university's Health Sciences Campus. That was a real estate purchase. It says nothing about how a graduate student reaches a Lourdes unit, and that path is not public.
When a hospital publishes nothing, the first question is contractual. The ICMSN handbook requires a current agency contract on file before any clinical day, and signing a new one can stretch from weeks into months. Independent practices and health centers
Independent and community practices decide on students for themselves. A physician-owned family clinic or an NP-led office can say yes after one good conversation, as long as its nurse practitioner meets Louisiana's preceptor rules and the practice will sign an agency contract with the school. That flexibility is why most of our Lafayette searching happens here.
Federally qualified health centers widen the field. HRSA's current file lists 24 active health center sites across Acadiana, operated by Iberia Comprehensive Community Health Center, Southwest Louisiana Primary Health Care Center, Acadiana CARES, SWLA Center for Health Services and HAART. Shortage-area designations in Lafayette Parish
HRSA designates the parish's low-income population as a primary care Health Professional Shortage Area, scored 10 at its last update on September 2, 2025, and as a mental health shortage area, scored 14 as of July 9, 2025. The scale runs from 0 to 25, and higher numbers signal greater need.
Both are the lowest scores in Acadiana: every surrounding parish rates higher on each. The designations still mark real access gaps for low-income patients, and the clinics serving them carry broad, steady caseloads. For an FNP student in NURS 583 or a PMHNP student in NURS 591, a site like that can supply the volume and variety a practicum depends on.

Can I ask a nurse practitioner at an Ochsner Lafayette General clinic to precept me?
Ochsner's published rule asks students not to approach its providers, clinicians or staff. You can still have a preferred preceptor in mind: Ochsner tells students to route sites, supervisors and preceptors of interest through their school coordinator, and only schools enter requests in InPlace. With a four-month minimum for new agreements, raise an Ochsner preference early.
How far ahead should I plan a Lafayette placement?
Work backward from the contract. Ochsner wants at least four months for a new agreement, and the ICMSN warns a new agency contract can take weeks to months. Independent practices often move faster, but the full file still has to be in before day one. The first clinical course guide shows when that day arrives.
Does Our Lady of Lourdes take nurse practitioner students?
FMOL Health publishes no process for outside NP students at its Lourdes hospitals, so there is no public answer. Any rotation there would rest on an agency contract between the school and the hospital. Ask course faculty whether one exists before you count on a Lourdes unit, and keep independent and community options open in the meantime.
Do I have to do my clinicals in Lafayette to study at UL Lafayette?
No. The MSN is taught online, and UL Lafayette's rule is that clinical experiences take place in Louisiana, not in any particular city. Students elsewhere in the state can precept close to home, and our search starts from your address, not from campus.
Are community health centers in Lafayette good sites for FNP hours?
They can be. Health centers serve designated low-income populations, often patients of every age with a wide spread of conditions, a useful match for the family practicums.
