Mississippi residents and UL Lafayette nursing
Mississippi is the one state beyond Louisiana where UL Lafayette says its nurse practitioner programs meet educational requirements, and it also appears on the Nursing Education and DNP lists. For NP students, though, the clinical hours still happen in Louisiana. Here is what that means from the Coast to Jackson.

How Mississippi residents fit each UL Lafayette program
Of Louisiana's three neighbors, only Mississippi earns the "meets educational requirements" mark for UL Lafayette's NP tracks. Its row, in the university's own terms:

Enrolled from Mississippi, training in Louisiana
The "meets" mark answers whether you can enroll, not where you train. UL Lafayette's shared entry for the FNP, PMHNP and certificate still requires every rotation to happen in Louisiana, so a Mississippi resident plans around Louisiana sites from the first semester; the rule itself is explained on the Louisiana-only clinicals page.
Sort out licensing before you apply. Mississippi has held a seat in the Nurse Licensure Compact since January 19, 2018, and its board reads that seat broadly: a nurse whose declared home state is a member, and who stays in good standing, may work in the rest of them. UL Lafayette words the MSN rule three ways. The catalog allows a Louisiana license or a multistate one, the online MSN page wants proof of Louisiana residency with a multistate license, and the state authorization entry names a Louisiana RN license.
A Mississippi multistate license falls between those readings, so ask the online programs office which one governs, and compare the wording on our license requirements page. Certificate applicants face a second step: neither state belongs to the APRN Compact, so a Mississippi APRN license cannot stand in for the Louisiana APRN license the PMHNP certificate asks for.
Nurse practitioner practice and licensing in Mississippi
Mississippi splits nursing oversight in an unusual way. Licensing sits with the Mississippi Board of Nursing, which also signs off on practical nursing (PN) programs, while RN programs follow standards from the state's higher education board, IHL (short for Institutions of Higher Learning).
AANP counts Mississippi among its reduced practice states: an NP there needs a board-approved collaborator, a physician or a dentist, licensed in Mississippi. No preceptor tax credit or comparable incentive is on record for the state.
Its larger systems include UMMC (the University of Mississippi Medical Center), Forrest Health, North Mississippi Health Services, Singing River Health System and Memphis-based Baptist Memorial Health Care, whose Mississippi Baptist Medical Center sits in Jackson. Jackson and Gulfport-Biloxi are the largest metros. These sketch the landscape; they are not sites that host UL Lafayette students.
A DNP residency at home, and IHL's rule
The DNP is the program that can bring clinical work back to Mississippi. UL Lafayette lets residency hours be completed in Louisiana or in your home state, within your specialty area of practice; the residency page breaks down NURS 821, NURS 822 and NURS 823.
Mississippi's rule for programs based elsewhere comes from IHL rather than the nursing board. Programs from other states, undergraduate or graduate, are held to Mississippi's standards once their students train there. IHL counts an in-state practicum as physical presence, which brings a review by its Nursing Education office; that review can take three months, and IHL's 2024 manual wants the request at least four months ahead. The program also belongs to SARA or holds distance-education authorization from MCCA.
Whether that framework reaches a post-MSN residency, which leads to no new license, is a question for UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator and for IHL. Raise it before semester 4.

Questions UL Lafayette students ask
Can UL Lafayette FNP clinical hours be done at a Mississippi clinic?
No. Mississippi's status lets you enroll from home, but UL Lafayette requires every FNP, PMHNP and certificate rotation to take place in Louisiana, so hours logged at a Mississippi practice do not count toward the MSN. The DNP differs: its residency hours may be completed in Mississippi, within your specialty.
Does a Mississippi multistate RN license meet UL Lafayette's MSN rule?
It may, and it is worth confirming first. The catalog accepts a multistate license, but the online MSN page ties that option to proof of Louisiana residency, and the state authorization entry names a Louisiana license. Ask UL Lafayette's online programs office which wording applies to you before applying.
Can a Mississippi APRN apply to the PMHNP post-master's certificate?
Yes, with a Louisiana APRN license in hand. The certificate asks for an unencumbered Louisiana APRN license alongside the RN license, plus current national certification as an ACNP, ANP, FNP, GNP or WHNP. A Mississippi APRN license on its own does not meet that rule.
Who oversees nursing programs in Mississippi?
Two bodies share the job. IHL writes the standards for RN programs and decides on outside programs that train students in Mississippi, while the Mississippi Board of Nursing handles licensing and approves PN programs. For a UL Lafayette DNP residency in Mississippi, IHL is the office to ask, together with the DNP Coordinator.
What is nurse practitioner practice like in Mississippi?
AANP rates it reduced practice, since Mississippi NPs need a board-approved physician or dentist as collaborator. Louisiana, where UL Lafayette NP students train, also requires a collaborative practice agreement for APRNs who diagnose and manage, so the model carries across the line.
