An Oregon nurse's guide to UL Lafayette nursing programs
UL Lafayette takes Oregon residents into its post-MSN Doctor of Nursing Practice, and the residency can be done in Oregon. Its FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate are not enrolling Oregonians, and their clinical hours happen in Louisiana. One more Oregon wrinkle: the state sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, and that affects any plan with a Louisiana leg.

Each UL Lafayette online program carries its own answer for an Oregon address, and only one of them is a yes. The labels in the table are the university's; the state authorization overview explains how its categories work.

OSBN and outside programs: a light touch for the DNP
Oregon's Board of Nursing (OSBN) reserves its advance-notice form for out-of-state programs preparing practical or registered nurses for a first license. Such a program sends one form per track before its students begin learning activities in Oregon, then sends it again every year, citing division 21 of the Board's rules.
The Board also names who is exempt from that form. Advanced practice programs are exempt, and so are programs that lead to no license at all, with the DNP given as one example alongside RN-to-BSN tracks. Its APRN FAQ answers the placement question just as plainly: an APRN program from another state does not need OSBN approval to put students in Oregon. A former rule that made visiting NP students obtain Board sign-off before practicums was repealed on July 1, 2021.
Two expectations remain. OSBN says anyone teaching in Oregon needs a current Oregon nursing license, and a school must hold authorization, through the state's higher education commission or through NC-SARA, before it enrolls Oregon residents; UL Lafayette's page states that it belongs to NC-SARA. Ask the DNP Coordinator how the faculty license point is met before you settle on an Oregon site.
An Oregon license, NP practice and the care landscape
An RN license issued by Oregon is single-state: Oregon is not a compact member, and the compact's own map shows no bill there to change that. UL Lafayette's MSN asks for a Louisiana or multistate RN license, so an Oregon-only license falls short there; our RN license guide lays out the university's wording. Oregon is also outside the APRN Compact.
For nurse practitioners, AANP classes Oregon as a full practice state.
Portland's metro reaches into Washington, yet close to two million of its residents are on the Oregon side; Salem ranks second, ahead of Eugene-Springfield and Bend. Big providers include Legacy Health, Providence in Oregon, the state's academic center OHSU, Samaritan Health Services, and the Northwest region of Kaiser Permanente. Read them as the shape of the market, not a list of places hosting UL Lafayette students.
Building a UL Lafayette DNP around an Oregon practice
The post-MSN DNP runs 39 credits from a Fall start, with applications due May 1. Residency time totals 420 hours over three courses (120, then 180, then 120) in your specialty area, and those hours join your MSN hours toward the 1,000 supervised post-baccalaureate hours the doctorate expects. Budget for two trips to Lafayette: one for the DNP Orientation Intensive at the outset and one to present your Synthesis Project at the finish. Coursework otherwise stays online.

Questions UL Lafayette students ask
Can I complete UL Lafayette's PMHNP from Portland?
Not while living in Oregon. UL Lafayette has made no determination for Oregon on the MSN PMHNP, the FNP or the PMHNP certificate, and it is not taking students from states in that group. Those tracks also hold every clinical hour in Louisiana, so relocating with a Louisiana RN license is the way in.
Does OSBN have to approve my UL Lafayette DNP residency site?
The Board's guidance exempts DNP and advanced practice programs from its out-of-state notice form, and its APRN FAQ tells visiting APRN programs that Board approval is not needed for Oregon placements. Faculty teaching in Oregon still need an Oregon license, so ask the DNP Coordinator how UL Lafayette covers that.
Why does Oregon's compact status matter for UL Lafayette?
An Oregon license carries no multistate privilege, so it does not let you work in Louisiana. That matters for the MSN tracks, which want a Louisiana or multistate RN license, and for any Louisiana rotation. The DNP, by contrast, is satisfied by a clean RN license from any U.S. state plus, for post-MSN entry, a U.S. NP license.
Is there a preceptor incentive for Oregon mentors?
Official sources show no Oregon preceptor incentive program. What a DNP mentor contributes is agency-based: in NURS 822 the student carries out an evidence-based intervention together with the residency mentor and the faculty advisor, so the project lives inside the mentor's own organization.
