California nurses and UL Lafayette's online programs
UL Lafayette's post-MSN DNP takes California residents and lets the residency run where you live. Its FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate do not, because those tracks keep every clinical hour in Louisiana. California's Board of Registered Nursing adds its own layer for NP programs based elsewhere, so check your plan with UL Lafayette's online programs office before applying.

California's rule for NP programs from other states
California's Board of Registered Nursing screens NP programs from other states before their students see a single California patient. The governing regulation, 16 CCR § 1486, makes prior Board approval the entry ticket. Beyond that, the school shows that its curriculum tracks NONPF and AACN standards, that its California preceptors clear the Board's bar, and that students learn California's own NP law, standardized procedures among it. The paperwork opens with the Board's clinical practice verification form, a vote at a Board meeting follows, and the school keeps a preceptor record for every Californian who teaches its students.
For the student, § 1486 means holding a current California RN license during any clinical time in the state. For the preceptor, it means a California license in their own field, qualification in the student's NP population, orientation from the school, a faculty review at least once every other year, and a signed role agreement shared by agency, preceptor and program.
The regulation aims at programs that turn out new NPs, and UL Lafayette's post-MSN DNP turns out none, so ask the DNP Coordinator and the Board how it treats a DNP residency before you commit to a California site.
License, practice and the health care map
Nothing links California to the Nurse Licensure Compact, today or in any bill on the table, so a California RN license is good in California only, and the Board builds NP certification on top of it. AANP puts California in its restricted tier, where some settings and procedures still tie an NP to a standardized protocol, with possible exemptions.
Los Angeles and Orange County make up the giant metro; the Inland Empire, the Bay Area and San Diego trail it. Kaiser Permanente, based in Oakland, is the name most Californians know, and Sutter Health, Stanford Health Care, the Los Angeles flagship Cedars-Sinai and the six University of California academic health centers round out the leading systems. They sketch the state and are not offered as sites that host UL Lafayette students.
Where UL Lafayette fits for a Californian
The strongest fit is the 39-credit DNP: one Fall cohort with a May 1 deadline, online courses in fall and spring, and 420 residency hours in NURS 821, NURS 822 and NURS 823, set in your specialty area of practice. Campus time is limited to the Orientation Intensive and the Synthesis Project presentation. Admission calls for an unencumbered U.S. RN license and, for post-MSN applicants, a U.S. APRN nurse practitioner license.
Nurses relocating to Louisiana can look at the MSN tracks once they live there. A California license has no compact reach, so a Louisiana RN license becomes part of that move; the RN license page sets out UL Lafayette's wording.

Questions UL Lafayette students ask
Is UL Lafayette's online FNP available in California?
No. UL Lafayette lists California among the states where it has made no determination for the FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate and is not enrolling students. Those tracks also require clinical rotations in Louisiana with a Louisiana RN license. For California residents, the UL Lafayette nursing program that is open is the post-MSN DNP.
Must I hold a California RN license for DNP residency hours in California?
For students of outside NP programs, § 1486 says yes, and a California-certified NP already has that license because certification rests on it. How the Board views a post-MSN DNP residency is a separate question for UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator and the Board of Registered Nursing.
Does UL Lafayette's DNP lead to California NP certification?
No. The post-MSN DNP admits nurses who already hold a master's in advanced practice (NP, CRNA, CNM), leadership or education, and it prepares no new license. UL Lafayette also cautions that its online programs may not satisfy another state's license or certificate rules, so plan California credentials on their own track.
When does the UL Lafayette DNP start, and when do residency courses begin?
UL Lafayette admits one DNP cohort a year, in the Fall, with applications due May 1. In the catalog plan, the residency courses fall in semesters four, five and six, which leaves time to settle a California site and any Board questions before NURS 821. The DNP residency page shows the sequence.
