Oklahoma nurses and UL Lafayette: sorting out the DNP question
Oklahoma gets two answers from UL Lafayette on the post-MSN Doctor of Nursing Practice: the DNP program list leaves the state out, yet the state-by-state section of the same page prints the DNP under Oklahoma. The FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate are closed to Oklahoma residents. A written reply from UL Lafayette's online programs office should come before any application.

Where Oklahoma lands on each UL Lafayette list
UL Lafayette sorts every online program by the student's home state, and an Oklahoma address draws a mixed set of answers. The categories below are the university's own; our state authorization guide explains what each one means.

Oklahoma is one of six places the DNP program list passes over, with Kansas, Maryland, Tennessee, Washington and Wyoming. Treat the doctorate as unresolved for you until the online programs office or the DNP Coordinator answers for your address.
OBN rule 485:10-5-12 and a residency in Oklahoma
Oklahoma's Board of Nursing splits outside programs into two groups. Programs that prepare students for a first license need the Board's permission in advance, backed by a letter proving full approval back home, supervision from Oklahoma-licensed faculty, a signed clinical affiliation agreement and preceptorships that follow Board policy.
The second group is RNs studying in an APRN program run from another state. Subsection (c) lets them precept in Oklahoma with no permission request, provided the student may legally work as an RN in Oklahoma on a clean license, the supervising faculty member's Oklahoma license matches or exceeds the level being taught, and the program satisfies OBN's own APRN education standards.
A post-MSN doctorate like UL Lafayette's leads to no new license, so neither group describes it cleanly. Put the question to the DNP Coordinator and to OBN, and let UL Lafayette confirm where it stands on any Oklahoma list.
Licensing, practice and health care across Oklahoma
Oklahoma has been issuing multistate licenses since January 2018, when the enhanced compact started, and Louisiana's own membership dates from July 2019, so a multistate RN license from Oklahoma already covers practice in Louisiana. UL Lafayette phrases its license requirement several ways on different pages, compared in our RN license guide. Oklahoma has passed no APRN Compact law.
On AANP's map Oklahoma is restricted. Its fact sheet links NP prescribing to written proof of physician supervision across 6,240 hours and bars Schedule II prescribing.
Oklahoma City and Tulsa each hold more than a million metro residents; Lawton and Enid are much smaller. Large systems include INTEGRIS Health, Hillcrest HealthCare System, the University of Oklahoma's OU Health, Saint Francis Health System and the St. Anthony hospitals of SSM Health. Read them as a picture of the state's care, not a roster of UL Lafayette sites.
Oklahoma's preceptor tax credit
House Bill 3351, passed in 2024, gives Oklahoma-licensed physicians, PAs and APRNs in primary care a state income tax credit when they teach students in medicine, PA or APRN programs. Credit is counted in rotations of 160 hours, capped at ten a year and handed out first come, first served until the money for the year runs out.
The Tax Commission lists it as nonrefundable and good from 2026 to 2035, with unused credit carried forward up to five years. The Oklahoma Health Care Workforce Training Commission administers it and decides whether a rotation for a Louisiana program qualifies.
What UL Lafayette offers an Oklahoma nurse right now
If the DNP question resolves in your favor, the program is 39 credits with one Fall cohort and a May 1 deadline. Its 420 residency hours in NURS 821, NURS 822 and NURS 823 sit in your specialty area of practice, and UL Lafayette allows them in Louisiana or your home state. Is UL Lafayette's online DNP open to Oklahoma residents?
It depends on which part of UL Lafayette's state authorization page you read. The DNP program list omits Oklahoma, while the state-by-state section includes the DNP under Oklahoma. Ask the online programs office and the DNP Coordinator for a written answer tied to your address before you start an application, and keep that reply with your admission records.
Can I take UL Lafayette's FNP from Tulsa or Oklahoma City?
Not while you live in Oklahoma. UL Lafayette places Oklahoma among the states where it has made no determination for the FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate, and it is not enrolling students from that group. Those tracks also hold every rotation in Louisiana under a Louisiana RN license, so relocating comes first.
Does OBN need to approve UL Lafayette before an Oklahoma residency?
OBN's advance-permission step targets programs that lead to initial licensure, and its APRN subsection sets license and faculty conditions instead. A post-MSN doctorate adds no new license, so neither branch clearly applies to it. The DNP Coordinator and OBN can tell you which, if either, reaches your residency.
Will my Oklahoma multistate license satisfy UL Lafayette?
For the DNP, UL Lafayette wants a clean RN license from any U.S. state and, for post-MSN entry, a U.S. nurse practitioner license. For the MSN, the catalog accepts a Louisiana or multistate RN license, though other UL Lafayette pages word it differently, one of them adding a proof-of-Louisiana-residency clause.
