Texas nurses and UL Lafayette's nursing programs
For a nurse living in Texas, UL Lafayette's post-MSN Doctor of Nursing Practice is the program that opens: the state authorization page accepts Texas residents, and the residency can happen in Texas. The FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate are not taking Texas students. A move to Louisiana changes that, and Southeast Texas sits right next to the Lake Charles region.

Practice and licensing in Texas
The Texas Board of Nursing licenses the state's nurses. January 19, 2018 is when its compact membership took effect, and from that day a multistate RN license issued in Texas has also covered practice in Louisiana. Advanced practice is another matter: Texas has not enacted the APRN Compact, and APRN licenses there remain Texas-only.
AANP places Texas in its restricted practice category. An NP there works under a physician's delegation and supervision, keeps written physician protocols for the length of a career, and has Schedule II prescriptions confined to particular practice settings.
Texas rewards one kind of preceptor, though not the NP kind. Through a clinical preceptor tuition exemption that also reaches preceptors' children, public Texas colleges waive part of the tuition for a Texas-resident RN who precepts, under a written agreement, in an undergraduate program leading to first-time RN licensure, and for that nurse's children. Preceptors of graduate and NP students sit outside it.
Houston Methodist is one large Texas system; UT Southwestern Medical Center, Texas Health Resources and Baylor Scott & White Health are others, as is University Health, based in San Antonio. Dallas-Fort Worth is the biggest metro, ahead of Houston, San Antonio and Austin. These illustrate the market; they are not sites that host UL Lafayette students.
A DNP residency in Texas and the Board's out-of-state rule
UL Lafayette lets DNP residency hours be completed in Louisiana or your home state, inside your specialty area of practice, so a Texas resident can plan NURS 821, NURS 822 and NURS 823 around sites at home. Semester by semester detail is on the residency page.
Texas does make outside nursing programs get Board approval before any clinical learning experience begins in the state. The governing guideline, number 3.1.3 (updated May 1, 2026), directs the rule at programs that train vocational nurses or first-time RNs, whether diploma, associate, BSN or entry-level master's, NC-SARA members included. It also states that those approval rules do not extend to post-licensure RN to BSN, graduate or APRN programs. APRN programs that want Texas BON approval answer to a separate chapter, 22 TAC 219, and nationally accredited programs stay outside that approval.
A post-MSN residency leads to no new license. Whether any Texas step still applies to a UL Lafayette residency is for the DNP Coordinator and the Texas BON to confirm before semester 4.
Southeast Texas, next door to Lake Charles
Beaumont and Port Arthur anchor Southeast Texas, across the line from Lake Charles. Proximity leaves UL Lafayette's rules unchanged: its compliance duties follow the state where a student is located, so a nurse living in Southeast Texas stays outside the NP tracks even when a Louisiana clinic is the closest one.
The border still opens two paths. A DNP student there can weigh residency sites in Southeast Texas against sites around Lake Charles. Louisiana carries the "meets educational requirements" mark for all three NP tracks, so relocating changes your status. Line up three things.
- LicenseThe catalog accepts a Louisiana or multistate RN license, but the online MSN page pairs the multistate route with proof of Louisiana residency. Compare the wording on our license requirements page and confirm your case with the online programs office.
- TimingMSN applications close October 30 for spring and June 30 for fall; the PMHNP certificate also starts in January or August. Settle your Louisiana address before your deadline.

Questions UL Lafayette students ask
Is UL Lafayette's online FNP open to nurses living in Texas?
Not at present. UL Lafayette lists Texas among the states it is not accepting FNP, PMHNP or PMHNP certificate students from, since it has made no determination on Texas's educational requirements. Lists change, so check the state authorization page when you plan. The post-MSN DNP does accept Texas residents.
Can a UL Lafayette DNP residency take place in Houston or Dallas?
The program's wording allows it: residency hours may be completed in Louisiana or your home state, within your specialty area of practice. The Texas BON describes its out-of-state approval rule as aimed at pre-licensure programs rather than graduate ones. Confirm the specifics with the DNP Coordinator and the Board before NURS 821.
Does Texas reward nurse practitioners who precept?
Not through its tuition exemption, which serves Texas-resident RNs precepting pre-licensure undergraduates for public colleges, plus their children. NP preceptors of graduate students fall outside it, and Texas's higher education grant pages list neither a tax credit for precepting nor a grant aimed at NP preceptors.
I live in Beaumont. Can I do FNP clinicals in Lake Charles?
Not while your home is in Texas. UL Lafayette decides NP-track eligibility by the state where you are located, and Texas residents are not being accepted, even though a Lake Charles site would satisfy the Louisiana clinical rule. Moving to Louisiana opens the FNP; the DNP is open to you now.
Do UL Lafayette DNP students from Texas have to travel to Lafayette?
Twice: for the DNP Orientation Intensive that opens the program and for the formal Synthesis Project presentation that closes it. In between, coursework is online in fall and spring, and the residency hours can stay in Texas.
