North Carolina nurse practitioners considering UL Lafayette
The post-MSN DNP is the UL Lafayette program a North Carolina nurse practitioner can apply to, and its residency may take place in North Carolina. Where NCBON's authority ends
The North Carolina Board of Nursing draws a narrow circle around outside programs. Its rule 21 NCAC 36 .0233 concerns unlicensed students from out-of-state programs who want to use a North Carolina clinical agency: the host agency's top nurse administrator, or an RN they designate, files for NCBON approval at least 30 days out, with a packet that runs from home-state board approval to proof of licensure by the UNC Board of Governors.
A UL Lafayette DNP resident is not an unlicensed student, though, and NCBON's education FAQ places post-licensure graduate study, doctoral programs included, outside its jurisdiction wherever the program is based.
- License check: if your nursing license is neither North Carolina's nor multistate, NCBON's FAQ sends graduate students like you to its Licensure Department for the conditions on clinical work in the state.
- SARA: North Carolina has belonged to SARA since mid-2016, and UL Lafayette's authorization page lists the university as an NC-SARA member; the FAQ below covers what that may mean.
Nobody in research checked whether UL Lafayette appears on any North Carolina list. Confirm the residency plan with the DNP Coordinator, and take license questions to NCBON.
A career-long physician agreement
By AANP's measure North Carolina is a restricted state. The physician agreement is not a transition period but lasts an NP's whole career, and NP licensure goes through a Joint Subcommittee pairing the Board of Nursing with the Medical Board. A DNP earned at UL Lafayette sits on top of that arrangement rather than changing it.
RN licensing is friendlier to travel. North Carolina nurses have held multistate privileges since January 2018, and Louisiana joined the compact in July 2019, so a North Carolina multistate RN license is honored in Louisiana. No APRN Compact law exists in North Carolina yet.
Charlotte, the Triangle and the Triad
Charlotte's metro, which spills over into South Carolina, is the biggest in North Carolina; then come Raleigh-Cary, the Greensboro-High Point area and Winston-Salem. Atrium Health, now under Advocate Health, sits alongside Novant, Duke Health, UNC Health and ECU Health among the large systems. Treat them as a portrait of the market, never as sites tied to UL Lafayette; research found no North Carolina preceptor incentive.
Fitting UL Lafayette's DNP around a North Carolina practice
Coursework is online and the program runs 39 credits, with a single Fall start and a May 1 application date. Its practice spine is three residency courses, 420 clock hours together, which UL Lafayette lets you complete in North Carolina, in the area of practice you specialize in; anyone short of the 1,000 hours of supervised practice past the BSN adds directed studies.

No. NCBON keeps its hands off programs like UL Lafayette's DNP: it lists doctoral, graduate and RN-BSN study among the areas it does not govern, and it takes no position approving or rejecting graduate programs from any state. Its .0233 rule on outside clinicals speaks to unlicensed students. Confirm the rest with UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator.
My nursing license is not from North Carolina and is not multistate. What then?
Then North Carolina has a step for you. NCBON points graduate students in that position to its Licensure Department, reached through a contact form on the board's website, for the terms of any clinical experience in the state. Settle it early, because UL Lafayette's own DNP license rules apply on top of whatever North Carolina asks.
Is UL Lafayette's online FNP open to North Carolina residents?
Not currently. UL Lafayette has made no determination about North Carolina for its family and psychiatric NP tracks or the PMHNP certificate, so it is not accepting residents into them. Each keeps clinicals in Louisiana and asks for a Louisiana RN license; a nurse weighing a move should start with the Louisiana guide.
Does SARA membership settle a North Carolina residency?
It frames the question without closing it. The board's FAQ links possible eligibility for North Carolina clinicals to studying with a SARA-approved college while its didactic courses continue, and UL Lafayette names itself an NC-SARA member. Whether that reaches a post-MSN residency is for the DNP Coordinator to confirm before you choose a site.
