Why one missed practicum moves the rest

In every UL Lafayette plan the precepted courses sit in consecutive semesters at the end, so the last practicum is the last semester. When one slips, graduation usually slips with it.

The catalog does not say how often each practicum is offered, and the Nursing Education plan marks several of its other courses Fall only, so ask your faculty advisor when the course you missed runs next. A course that must be retaken is, under the consortium's rules, retaken at your home university if it is offered there. The first clinical course guide shows where each sequence begins.

The time limits running in the background

A single slipped semester fits inside most limits, but slips add up, and a repeat under the B rule adds another. Keep these in view as you replan.

Master's programs: under the Graduate School's rule, credits counted toward a non-doctoral program may be no more than six years old when it is conferred.
DNP: every requirement must be completed within five years of admission to the program.
Leave of absence: up to one calendar year for students in good standing, for medical reasons, family necessity or dependent care, or military service. Financial hardship is not a listed reason, requests go in at least 30 days ahead, leaves are never retroactive, and an approved leave keeps your original catalog and extends your time limit.
Stopping out: a student not enrolled for one or more semesters without an approved leave must apply for readmission.
Withdrawals: the consortium allows an MSN student no more than two W grades.

Commencement and the graduation application

UL Lafayette's published ceremonies are Friday, December 18, 2026 for fall and Friday, May 14, 2027 for spring. The calendar's last day to apply for graduation was September 25 for fall 2026 and is February 26, 2027 for spring. Summer 2027 dates are not yet posted, so a summer finish has no confirmed calendar yet.

If your last practicum moves from fall to spring, your target moves from the December ceremony to May, and the spring application date becomes the one to watch. Spring 2027 classes end April 30 and final grades are due at noon on May 10, which leaves little room for a late clinical start in your final course. Consortium courses taught at a partner school may run on that school's dates, so confirm the end date of your own section. The academic calendar guide lists every date.

After graduation: licensing in Louisiana

A later finish moves every licensing step behind it. Nurse practitioner graduates sit for national certification in their population, then apply to the Louisiana State Board of Nursing for an APRN license, which rests on a current RN license, the completed graduate program or post-graduate certificate in the role and population, and that certification.

Practice brings two more steps. An APRN who engages in medical diagnosis and management needs a collaborative practice agreement with a physician or dentist, covering availability, practice-management methods and patient coverage during absences. Prescriptive authority requires 500 hours of clinical practice as a licensed APRN or APRN applicant within two years in the role and population, and graduate clinical hours that met certification eligibility may count toward it. PMHNP certificate students already hold a Louisiana APRN license, so for them the delay mainly moves the new population certification and the work that depends on it.

They may. Louisiana requires 500 hours of clinical practice as a licensed APRN or APRN applicant within two years in the role and population before granting prescriptive authority, and graduate program clinical hours that met certification eligibility may be counted. Confirm your own case with the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.

Does a delay affect the DNP differently?

The DNP has its own clock: every requirement must be finished within five years of admission. Its residency courses run in semesters four through six, and students who need more hours register for NURS 809 to 812 with the DNP Coordinator's permission. DNP residency hours can be completed in Louisiana or your home state.
