Studying with UL Lafayette while living in Alabama
For an Alabama nurse, the open door at UL Lafayette is the post-MSN Doctor of Nursing Practice: Alabama sits on its accepted list, and the residency may run in the state where you live. Alabama on UL Lafayette's program lists
UL Lafayette sorts each online program by where the student lives, and an Alabama address gets three different answers. The table keeps the university's own categories; our state authorization guide explains each one. Alabama is printed under the DNP in both of that page's lists, so the DNP conflict that touches six other states does not reach you.

Licensing and NP practice in Alabama
Alabama's compact participation began in January 2020, and Louisiana's dates from mid-2019, so an Alabama multistate license already reaches across the state line. UL Lafayette still words its RN license rule three ways on different pages; our RN license page compares them.
AANP files Alabama under reduced practice: each NP keeps a state-regulated physician collaboration covering some part of practice, and the nursing and medical examiners' boards share oversight. The APRN Compact has not passed there.
UAB Medicine anchors Birmingham, the biggest metro. The Huntsville Hospital Health System serves the north, Baptist Health works out of Montgomery, and Mobile has Infirmary Health and the university-run USA Health. We mention them to sketch the state, not as sites that host UL Lafayette students.
The ABN's out-of-state rule and a DNP residency
Alabama keeps a close eye on programs based elsewhere. Under its administrative rule 610-X-3-.09, a prelicensure or advanced practice program from another state sends the ABN a letter of intent plus proof of approval a full 15 days ahead of any clinical learning. The packet lists every student and supervising clinician with license numbers, names the facility and carries sign-off from its top nursing executive. An annual per-program charge applies, and Alabama clinicals wait until the Board has approved and been paid.
The ABN's FAQ also sets a license rule for post-licensure learners, DNP students among them, doing Alabama clinical work. UL Lafayette's post-MSN DNP leads to no new license, so whether the letter of intent covers its residency is a question for the DNP Coordinator and the ABN.
Alabama also gives rural preceptors who teach without pay a state income tax credit (APTIP). Only rotations tied to schools physically in Alabama count, which leaves UL Lafayette rotations outside it.
The UL Lafayette DNP from an Alabama home
The DNP is a 39-credit post-MSN program with one Fall cohort a year and a May 1 deadline. Its residency spreads 420 clock hours across NURS 821, NURS 822 and NURS 823 in your specialty area of practice, and UL Lafayette lets you log them in Louisiana or in your own state. You visit Lafayette twice, for the DNP Orientation Intensive and for your Synthesis Project presentation; the DNP residency page covers each course.

Can I do UL Lafayette's online FNP while living in Alabama?
Not from an Alabama address today. UL Lafayette has made no determination for Alabama on the FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate and is not enrolling students from states in that group. Those tracks also keep every clinical hour in Louisiana. Nurses who move to Louisiana apply as Louisiana residents; check with UL Lafayette's online programs office first.
Do I need an Alabama license for DNP hours done in Alabama?
Per the ABN's FAQ, post-licensure students working clinically in Alabama, DNP students included, must be licensed there directly or through a compact member's multistate license. UL Lafayette's DNP admission separately calls for an unencumbered U.S. RN license and, from post-MSN applicants, a U.S. APRN nurse practitioner license.
Is Alabama's 15-day letter of intent something I file myself?
The rule places the filing on the school, not the student: the program based outside Alabama sends it with approval papers at least 15 days ahead. Ask UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator whether it applies to your residency and how the university handles it. We keep your site, mentor and license details ready so that step never waits on you.
Could my Alabama preceptor use the state's tax credit for my rotation?
APTIP only recognizes rotations that serve schools physically based in Alabama. UL Lafayette is a Louisiana university, so time spent teaching a UL Lafayette student sits outside the credit, which the Alabama Department of Revenue lists from tax year 2024 with an end date in September 2031.
