What a Florida address opens and closes
Florida's entry on UL Lafayette's state authorization page reads as below in its September 2026 version. The online programs office can confirm it when you apply.

Florida's board approves prelicensure schools only
Florida's approval statute is section 464.019. Read closely, it concerns an institution that wants to offer nursing education in Florida leading to a first license, and Florida's board describes its education job in those same terms. Research turned up no Florida provision telling a post-licensure or graduate school from outside Florida, APRN programs included, to win approval or file notice ahead of clinical hours in the state.
For a UL Lafayette DNP resident, that points to a light touch, but it rests on what research did not find rather than on any ruling. Nobody checked whether UL Lafayette sits on a Florida list, either. Run your residency plan past the DNP Coordinator, and past the Florida board if a question remains.
Protocols, the compact and a funding program for Florida schools
Florida's RNs and APRNs hold licenses from the Florida Board of Nursing. Multistate licensing has operated in Florida since January 19, 2018, meaning a Florida compact license already works in Louisiana; the APRN Compact has never passed there. AANP rates Florida restricted, because some NPs there practice under a physician protocol for their entire careers, though exemptions can apply.
Then there is TEACH, the clinical-training funding program in section 409.91256, which AHCA administers. It reimburses qualifying host facilities, such as rural health clinics, federally qualified health centers and certain nonprofits in shortage areas, for hosting nursing students and primary care APRN students. Its limits rule out a UL Lafayette resident: the student's program must be accredited and Florida-based, preceptors need Florida licenses, funding hinges on appropriations, and the section sunsets July 1, 2034.
A home-state residency inside Florida's health care map
The doctorate itself: 39 credits, taught online, admitting once each Fall with May 1 as the cutoff. Residency spreads 420 hours over three courses, NURS 821 through NURS 823, set in your own specialty and completed in Florida or Louisiana. Your host agency supplies an approved mentor, who sits on the Synthesis Project committee. Two trips to Lafayette frame it all: the Orientation Intensive before classes and a project presentation to finish.
Scale helps here. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro is Florida's largest by far, near 6.4 million people, with the Tampa Bay, Orlando and Jacksonville areas trailing it. Big names include AdventHealth, which is headquartered in Florida, and BayCare, with UF Health, HCA Florida Healthcare and Baptist Health South Florida rounding out the examples. Is UL Lafayette's online FNP open to Floridians?
No. For the FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate, UL Lafayette has made no determination about Florida's educational requirements and does not admit Florida residents. Will Florida's board have to sign off on UL Lafayette for my residency?
Florida's approval law is written around prelicensure nursing education offered in the state, and research found nothing directing a graduate or APRN program based elsewhere to seek approval or send notice before clinical hours begin. That is a finding, not a ruling. The DNP Coordinator and the Florida board can confirm how your residency is treated.
Can my host facility get TEACH reimbursement for my hours?
Its terms point the other way. The student must attend an accredited, Florida-based program, the preceptor needs a Florida license, and funding depends on legislative appropriation. A resident from a Louisiana university does not fit those conditions, whatever kind of facility hosts the residency.
Does UL Lafayette's DNP accept a Florida nursing license?
Yes, as far as the wording goes. The DNP catalog entry calls for an RN license that is current and unencumbered and, after the MSN, an unencumbered nurse practitioner license, each issued in the U.S. The Graduate School section words it more broadly as U.S. nursing licensure. The DNP office confirms credentials during admission.
