A Wisconsin NP's route to UL Lafayette amid a new APRN law
A Wisconsin nurse practitioner looking at UL Lafayette will find the post-MSN Doctor of Nursing Practice open, with room for the residency to happen in Wisconsin. That residency needs an early conversation, because Wisconsin expects nursing schools from other states to carry its Board's approval. UL Lafayette's FNP and PMHNP concentrations, and its PMHNP certificate, are closed to Wisconsin residents.

Wisconsin's Board must approve outside nursing schools
Wisconsin is not vague on this. A DSPS form numbered 3067-OEE, whose latest revision is dated April 13, 2026, ties outside nursing schools to the approval standards in N 1.06 of the administrative code and states plainly that the Wisconsin Board of Nursing must sign off on them. Practical nursing sits at the bottom of the ladder the form describes; associate and bachelor's RN study, post-licensure bachelor's among it, fills the middle; graduate programs sit at the top.
Approval also has upkeep: a school holding it sends DSPS a self-evaluation, Form 3069OEE, for continued approval. For clinical teaching done inside Wisconsin, faculty and preceptors alike need Wisconsin licensure or a Wisconsin practice privilege.
Graduate programs sit inside that approval rule, so a UL Lafayette DNP residency in Wisconsin may be touched by it. UL Lafayette's Wisconsin approval status was not something research checked. Bring it to the DNP Coordinator and to DSPS before committing to a Wisconsin agency.
From APNP to APRN: the law that took effect September 1
Act 17 of 2025 is the law behind the change, and its effective date was September 1, 2026. It gave DSPS four recognized APRN roles to license (NP, CRNA, CNS and CNM) and switched every existing APNP license over to the APRN title. Independent practice, meaning practice without a collaborating physician, is its own application and requires Board approval.
AANP's state page, as research read it, shows Wisconsin in the reduced category, where NPs keep a collaborative relationship with a physician, and mentions that the APRN Modernization Act begins September 1, 2026. Multistate RN licensing under the compact began in Wisconsin on January 19, 2018. No APRN Compact law exists in Wisconsin.
Metro areas, largest first: Milwaukee-Waukesha, Madison, Green Bay, Appleton. Aspirus Health and Ascension Wisconsin operate in the state, as do UW Health and Froedtert ThedaCare Health, while Aurora Health Care belongs to Advocate Health. This is a sketch of the market, and it says nothing about where UL Lafayette students go. No Wisconsin preceptor incentive showed up in research.

Does Wisconsin's out-of-state approval rule cover a DNP?
Form 3067-OEE describes approval for out-of-state schools from the practical nurse level up through graduate programs, so graduate study is included. Whether a post-MSN residency brings UL Lafayette under it was not checked. Ask the DNP Coordinator and DSPS before you settle on a site.
Why does my Wisconsin license now say APRN instead of APNP?
Wisconsin's 2025 Act 17 kicked in on September 1, 2026, and DSPS carried every APNP license over to APRN. Practicing with no collaborating physician needs its own application plus the Board's approval. Make sure the license details in your DNP application match your current record.
Must my Wisconsin mentor hold a Wisconsin license?
Yes, or at least a Wisconsin practice privilege; the state asks one or the other of faculty and preceptors in its clinical settings. UL Lafayette separately requires its committee's approval of the agency mentor. Your placement advisor checks the license before proposing anyone.
