Illinois nurses and UL Lafayette's online programs
UL Lafayette accepts Illinois residents into its post-MSN DNP, and the residency hours can be completed in Illinois. The FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate keep every clinical hour in Louisiana and are not accepting Illinois residents. Illinois also stands outside the nurse compact, which shapes licenses on both ends.

Licensing in a state outside the compact
The state's Board of Nursing sits inside IDFPR, Illinois's Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Illinois sits outside the multistate licensing compact for nurses (the NLC), and research found no bill pending to bring it in. Because of that, a nurse holding a multistate license from elsewhere has no privilege to work there; practicing in Illinois takes an Illinois license. Nor has Illinois passed the APRN Compact.
AANP rates Illinois as reduced practice. Depending on the setting, a nurse practitioner keeps a collaborative agreement with a physician, or meets practice and continuing education thresholds and holds a consultative relationship before prescribing certain Schedule II drugs and benzodiazepines.
Plan for this if you might move. An Illinois license covers Illinois alone, so the MSN's Louisiana-or-multistate wording would mean a Louisiana license before an NP track after relocating. The license guide compares the programs.
The filing Illinois expects from outside programs
Illinois spells out a filing. Rule 1300.340(n) lists five items the board expects from an out-of-state nursing program before any of its students start clinical placements in Illinois:
- a statement showing that the nursing board where the program is based has approved or accredited it
- a letter naming the time frame, clinical agencies and units
- the course syllabus
- the signed contract with the clinical facility
- faculty qualification and preceptor forms
Once granted, the approval runs for two years and may be renewed, it comes with a yearly report, and the program's nursing faculty must carry Illinois RN licensure. Two gaps matter for a doctoral resident. The filing requirement appears among Illinois's registered nurse program standards with no word on APRN or graduate study, and the statutory exemption for RNs licensed elsewhere who enroll in graduate study speaks only to Illinois-based programs. Ask the DNP Coordinator and IDFPR how both bear on a residency before you pick an Illinois site.
Precepting in Chicago, Peoria and beyond
Illinois also sets terms for the preceptor. Faculty from the program approve and orient each one at the facility; the preceptor must be physically there any time you treat patients; and their RN license has to be issued by whichever state you are practicing in. An APRN who precepts also banks something toward license renewal. Each APRN student guided through a full term is worth 10 hours of continuing education, the credit tops out at 30 hours in a renewal cycle, and the school supplies the paperwork proving it.
Chicagoland, officially the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro, is where most of Illinois lives. The Illinois portion of the St. Louis area ranks next, and Peoria and Rockford follow. Advocate Health Care, Northwestern Medicine, Endeavor Health, UChicago Medicine and OSF HealthCare rank among the bigger systems; the list sketches Illinois care and says nothing about which sites take UL Lafayette students.

UL Lafayette's post-MSN DNP is 39 credits with a Fall start. Questions UL Lafayette students ask
Can I study UL Lafayette's online FNP from Chicago?
Not while living in Illinois. UL Lafayette is not accepting Illinois residents into the FNP, the PMHNP or the PMHNP certificate, having made no determination for the state. All three also hold rotations in Louisiana under a Louisiana RN license, which an Illinois nurse would need to add, since Illinois licenses are single-state.
Is my Illinois license enough for UL Lafayette's DNP?
By the catalog's wording, the DNP asks for a current, unencumbered RN license from a U.S. state, and post-MSN applicants add a U.S. nurse practitioner license. Illinois-issued licenses fit that description. Confirm with the DNP Coordinator during the virtual admission interview if your license history raises any question.
Would my Illinois preceptor earn continuing education credit?
Possibly. Illinois renewal rules credit an APRN with 10 CE hours for each APRN student they oversee through a semester or quarter; the cap is 30 per cycle, and your school has to document it. Ask the DNP Coordinator whether a post-MSN residency fits that rule and how UL Lafayette documents it.
Does UL Lafayette need Illinois approval for a residency there?
Illinois asks programs based elsewhere to file before placing students in its clinical sites, though the rule is written without mention of graduate or APRN study. Whether UL Lafayette has filed anything with Illinois was not something we could confirm, so raise it with the DNP Coordinator before you settle on a site.
