The psychiatric practicum sequence in UL Lafayette's PMHNP
UL Lafayette's MSN Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner plan holds its precepted work for the back half: NURS 591 in semester 4, NURS 592 in semester 5 and NURS 593 in semester 6, at 5 credits apiece. The 2026-27 catalog asks for at least 750 precepted hours across them, while a requirements page on the nursing site says 600. Below is the sequence, the hour conflict and the psychiatric preceptor each semester calls for.

Groundwork first, then three psychiatric practicums
Semesters 1 and 2 carry the MSN core that every concentration shares. Semester 3 turns psychiatric with NURS 508 Diagnostic Considerations and Psychopharmacology for Psychiatric Disorders and NURS 590 Psychotherapy for the Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse, both lecture-only in the MSN plan. The precepted courses follow in order.

Semester 3 is your runway. The psychopharmacology and psychotherapy courses give you the base a psychiatric preceptor expects, and nothing precepted competes for your time yet, which makes it the right term to settle who will take you for NURS 591. The full program layout is on the MSN PMHNP page.
750 or 600: two current sources disagree
The 2026-27 catalog calls for a minimum of 750 precepted clinical hours. UL Lafayette's online program page matches it and adds two details: the hours are direct patient care, and they happen in Louisiana. The PMHNP requirements page on the nursing site, as captured in February 2026, still lists 600 precepted direct patient care hours.
Credits split the same way. The catalog shows 48 to 51, the range coming from the thesis option, while the nursing site and the online overview say 48. Put the catalog first, and ask the graduate coordinator to confirm your total in writing if your admission letter or advising notes quote the smaller figure. Every NP number is compared on NP clinical hours.
Nowhere does UL Lafayette split the 750 among NURS 591, NURS 592 and NURS 593. The lab contact fields (13, then 18 and 18) suggest the later two weigh more, but only course faculty can give each term's hour target.
Scheduling a preceptor for 600 hours because one web page says so can leave you 150 hours short of the catalog. Plan for 750 until the graduate coordinator says otherwise.
What direct patient care means for these hours
Both UL Lafayette sources that describe PMHNP hours use the words direct patient care. In practice that means you assess, diagnose and help manage real patients under your preceptor's supervision, rather than watching from the corner of the room.
Louisiana's Board adds a second test: the majority of an APRN student's clinical experience must be with an APRN who holds an active, unencumbered license and certification in the population focus, which for you is psychiatric-mental health. A mix of other clinicians may teach part of the time, so a stretch with a psychiatrist can deepen a semester without replacing the psychiatric APRN at its center.

Matching a psychiatric preceptor to each semester
The PMHNP role spans the lifespan, and the catalog does not assign a patient group to each course the way the FNP plan does. That leaves you to spread age groups and settings across three semesters on purpose, so that your hours reach children, adults and older adults before you finish.
A workable pattern starts NURS 591 in outpatient adult psychiatry or community mental health, where a PMHNP manages medications and follows patients over weeks. NURS 592, the larger term, can add child and adolescent work, an inpatient or crisis unit, or substance use treatment. NURS 593 then fills whatever gap remains, perhaps older adults. Course faculty decide whether each setting fits.
Every Acadiana parish carries a mental health shortage-area designation, and Louisiana-approved programs from other states draw on the same psychiatric clinicians, so strong preceptors book up early. Each one needs an active Louisiana license, and Board rules cap any preceptor at two graduate APRN students at a time.
NURS 593 is not the certificate's NURS 597
UL Lafayette runs two courses titled Psychiatric Mental Health III. NURS 593, in the MSN, is 5 credits with 3 lecture and 18 lab contact hours. NURS 597, in the Post-Master's Certificate, is 4 credits with 3 lecture and 8 lab contact hours and carries an older-adult emphasis.
The difference matters when you plan your last semester or compare notes with a certificate student. Course materials, hour targets and site expectations for NURS 597 belong to a different program. If you are in the MSN, your final practicum is NURS 593, and its targets come from its own course faculty. When a certificate classmate mentions a 120-hour final course, that figure is attached to NURS 597 on the certificate's online page, not to yours. - Name the setting and populationPick where this term's hours will build range: adult outpatient, youth, inpatient, addiction or older adults.
- Confirm the preceptor qualifiesA psychiatric APRN with a Louisiana license and certification in the population, a graduate education, a year or more of practice and space for you.
- Put the approval file togetherBefore day one the consortium needs a current agency contract, a preceptor CV no older than two years, a letter of agreement carrying your signature plus those of faculty and the preceptor, and your health, OSHA and HIPAA documents. Must UL Lafayette PMHNP clinical hours be in Louisiana?
Yes. The online program page describes the PMHNP hours as direct patient care in Louisiana, and UL Lafayette's state authorization page says students in the concentration complete their clinical rotations in Louisiana with a Louisiana registered nurse license. How many hours is NURS 591?
UL Lafayette does not publish per-course hours for the MSN psychiatric practicums. The catalog lists 13 lab contact hours for NURS 591 and 18 each for NURS 592 and 593, but that field is not a clock-hour count. Ask course faculty for each term's target and confirm it covers your share of the 750-hour minimum.
Can a psychiatrist precept a UL Lafayette PMHNP student?
Louisiana's Board rules let a physician serve as a graduate preceptor alongside APRNs, so a psychiatrist can teach part of your hours. The same rules want the majority of your clinical time with an APRN licensed and certified in psychiatric-mental health. Course faculty approve every preceptor, so confirm the balance with them before the term.
Does NURS 590 carry clinical hours in the MSN?
Not in the MSN plan. The 2026-27 catalog lists NURS 590, Psychotherapy for the Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse, as 3 lecture hours with no lab contact in semester 3. The Post-Master's Certificate's online page attaches 60 observational hours to the same course, which is one reason to keep the two programs' requirements apart.
What if my psychiatric practicum grade comes in below B?
Under UL Lafayette's MSN rules, a course below B must be repeated, can be repeated only once, and a C does not count toward the program. The ICMSN handbook turns an unsatisfactory final evaluation into an F, and a D or F in any course ends progression, so the preceptor's final evaluation carries real weight.
