What UL Lafayette's state page means for South Dakota
South Dakota nurse practitioners have a UL Lafayette option in the post-MSN DNP, and its residency needs no move, since those hours may be completed in the student's home state. South Dakota addresses are not being accepted for the online FNP, the PMHNP or the PMHNP certificate, whose rotations happen only at Louisiana sites.

Accepted, not accepting: South Dakota's four entries
UL Lafayette gives every online program a separate list of states on its state authorization page. South Dakota shows up like this.

A board that leaves agreements to programs and agencies
Here South Dakota differs from many states. A Board of Nursing information sheet for programs outside the state, revised in June 2020, says the Board has no role approving them. For direct-care clinical placements, the deal is made by the outside program with whichever South Dakota party takes the student: the agency, the preceptor, or both.
The Board still wants a licensing tie to the state. It expects the program to keep one faculty member credentialed for South Dakota, by license or by privilege to practice, matching the students' level; for APRN learners, that means South Dakota APRN licensure or the privilege. ARSD 20:48:07:49, a second distance education rule, extends the same idea to faculty whose APRN students are located in South Dakota.
Whether a post-MSN residency triggers that faculty expectation is not answered in the Board's sheet, and whether South Dakota keeps any list naming UL Lafayette was not researched. Take both points to UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator and the Board.
Mentor standards and South Dakota's path to full practice
For the Board's own in-state programs, preceptor rules live in ARSD 20:48:07:34. Put simply, a preceptor's license cannot sit below the one the student is heading for, and an APRN preceptor needs a practice area close to the student's by role, focus or specialty. It was drafted for in-state schools, though it is a good lens for judging a South Dakota mentor.
For their first 1,040 hours, new South Dakota nurse practitioners keep a collaborative agreement in writing (the partner may be a physician, or else a certified NP or nurse midwife) before AANP's full practice label applies. Licensure itself hinges on graduate APRN education carrying 500 or more clinical hours in its role and population focus, plus graduate coursework in pharmacology, physical and health assessment, and pathophysiology.
Two compacts and the state's three care hubs
South Dakota nurses have used multistate licenses since January 19, 2018, the date the Nurse Licensure Compact took effect there. The APRN Compact became South Dakota law on February 5, 2024, putting the state beside Delaware, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming, yet that compact sits idle until two more states join them.
The Sioux Falls metro, with a sliver in Minnesota, is about twice the size of Rapid City's, and Aberdeen is a micropolitan area. Health systems in the state include Monument Health, Sanford Health and Avera Health; they describe the market, not places linked to UL Lafayette. Research found no South Dakota preceptor incentive.
The DNP timeline for a South Dakota NP
Applications for UL Lafayette's 39-credit DNP close May 1, and the new group starts each Fall. The first thing on the calendar is the DNP Orientation Intensive in Lafayette; the last is presenting your Synthesis Project there. In between, coursework is online and the residency happens in your specialty area of practice: 120 hours in Residency I, 180 in Residency II, 120 in Residency III. In South Dakota the placement contract runs between the program and the agency or preceptor, so every detail in that file has to be right. Questions UL Lafayette students ask
Can I take UL Lafayette's PMHNP program while living in South Dakota?
Not from South Dakota. UL Lafayette lists South Dakota as a state it is not accepting for psychiatric-mental health NP study, whether the MSN or the post-master's certificate, and the same goes for the FNP. All three want Louisiana rotations and a Louisiana RN license; see Louisiana-only clinicals for the reasons.
Must the South Dakota Board approve UL Lafayette before my residency?
The Board's out-of-state guidance says it does not approve programs from other states. It looks instead for a faculty tie to South Dakota, someone licensed or privileged there at the students' level, and it leaves the placement agreement to the program and the agency or preceptor. Confirm the arrangement with the DNP Coordinator.
What does full practice after 1,040 hours mean for my DNP?
That is AANP's summary of South Dakota's transition rule: a new NP works 1,040 hours under a written collaborative agreement before practicing fully. If you are still inside those hours, tell the DNP Coordinator when you plan the residency so the agency and mentor choice accounts for it.
Is South Dakota's APRN Compact in effect?
Not yet. South Dakota enacted it in February 2024, one of five states by 2026, and the compact only starts once there are seven. Until then a South Dakota NP license covers South Dakota alone, while the RN multistate license already crosses into other compact states.
