Where a North Dakota nurse fits in UL Lafayette's online programs
UL Lafayette lists North Dakota among the states its post-MSN Doctor of Nursing Practice accepts, and the residency hours may be completed in your home state. Its three nurse practitioner tracks are a different story: North Dakota residents are not being taken, since each of those programs runs its rotations on Louisiana soil with a Louisiana RN license.

NDBON's recognition process for distance programs
Distance programs sending learners into North Dakota facilities answer to an NDBON recognition process. The board treats a program as covered when it prepares people for LPN, RN or APRN licensure, which pulls graduate NP education in alongside entry-level schools; RN-BSN programs go unmentioned.
What NDBON and state law ask of a program
- Lead time: the recognition request is due at NDBON 60 days before students begin.
- Before every term: a student roster showing each person's North Dakota or compact license, plus the facilities, the courses, the supervising preceptors and faculty with resumes and licenses, copies of affiliation agreements, and confirmation from each site that it can make room.
- Headquarters approval: state law wants the program approved by the nursing board of the state it calls home.
- Campus-level clearance: a college teaching North Dakota students needs the State Board of Higher Education to authorize or exempt it, and NDBON looks for NC-SARA proof or that document.
Separately, a statute exempts students from a recognized out-of-state program, provided the board has been told in writing and clinical sites are available. UL Lafayette's page says it is an NC-SARA member, but research did not check whether UL Lafayette holds NDBON recognition, and nothing found says how the process views a post-MSN residency. Raise it with the DNP Coordinator and NDBON before choosing a site.
Compacts, practice authority and care from Fargo to Minot
Since January 19, 2018, North Dakota nurses holding a multistate RN license have been able to work across compact states. The APRN Compact became North Dakota law in March 2021, making it one of five enacting states as of 2026, yet the compact needs seven before it operates. On AANP's map, North Dakota nurse practitioners have full practice.
Fargo and Grand Forks spill over into Minnesota; Bismarck and Minot complete the four metros. Providers include Sanford Health, with hospitals in both Fargo and Bismarck; Altru in Grand Forks; Essentia Health's Fargo operation; Trinity Health up in Minot; and CommonSpirit's CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck. They sketch the landscape, not where a UL Lafayette student can train. Research turned up no North Dakota preceptor incentive.

Can a North Dakota RN start UL Lafayette's online FNP?
Only after a move to Louisiana. UL Lafayette is not accepting North Dakota residents for its Family NP, its Psychiatric/Mental Health NP or the PMHNP certificate, and each of the three trains students only at Louisiana sites, under a Louisiana RN license. Has NDBON recognized UL Lafayette as a distance program?
Research for this page did not look at NDBON's roster of recognized programs. The process reaches programs tied to APRN licensure, so ask UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator whether North Dakota residencies are filed with the board, and confirm with NDBON directly before an agency signs anything.
Does the North Dakota board see my mentor's paperwork?
A recognized program reports its preceptors every term, giving each one's name, resume and license, whether North Dakota or compact. UL Lafayette adds its own condition: your agency mentor needs approval for the Synthesis Project committee. Your placement advisor gathers those documents so every reviewer receives a complete file.
Can my North Dakota NP license cross state lines through a compact?
Not yet. The APRN Compact became law here in 2021, and five states in total had enacted it by 2026; nothing changes for NP licenses until a seventh does. RN practice is different: the Nurse Licensure Compact already covers North Dakota residents who hold multistate licenses.
