South Carolina residents: which UL Lafayette programs admit you
South Carolina is on the short list of states whose residents may enroll in UL Lafayette's online MSN in Nursing Education, and nurse practitioners there are eligible to seek the post-MSN DNP. For the FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate, South Carolina sits on the not-accepting list, since those clinical hours all fall in Louisiana.

Two programs welcome South Carolina residents
UL Lafayette's state authorization page opens two programs to South Carolina and closes the rest. The table mirrors it as of September 2026.

The teaching practicums and where they could happen
Two courses hold the Nursing Education concentration's precepted work. In the third semester, NURS 544, an advanced clinical practicum, calls for at least 60 clock hours; in the fourth, NURS 557 Nursing Education Practicum calls for at least 180, set in precepted classroom, lab and clinical environments. The 2026-27 catalog adds them to 240, although a program web page captured in 2025 gives 300.
The location of those hours is the open point for a South Carolinian. One UL Lafayette page applies its Louisiana clinical rule to every MSN concentration, and another names only the FNP, so get the graduate coordinator's answer in writing. Regulation 91-6 and what it reaches
South Carolina spells out a rule for outside programs, though it is aimed at initial licensure. Regulation 91-6 of the state's code of regulations says that when a program's parent institution sits in another state, and its clinical experiences in South Carolina prepare students for a first license, the South Carolina Board must approve it before those clinicals begin.
What an approved outside program must show
- Full approval where it is based, kept current.
- A nursing faculty member supervising directly, on site and during the shift, with a license from South Carolina or another compact state.
- An affiliation agreement in writing for the clinical site, with South Carolina's rules governing any precepted segments.
- A written report to the board inside 15 days whenever its compliance changes.
Nothing in 91-6 addresses APRN programs or RN-to-BSN ones, so its reach over a teaching practicum for licensed nurses or a post-MSN DNP residency is unclear. Research did not look at whether UL Lafayette holds any South Carolina approval. Ask the graduate coordinator or DNP Coordinator, and the board, before choosing a South Carolina site.
Licensing, practice agreements and a credit for in-state students
The South Carolina Board of Nursing sits within the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR). South Carolina's multistate licensing started January 19, 2018, which lets a South Carolina compact license travel to Louisiana; no APRN Compact law has passed there. AANP counts the state as restricted, because delegated acts require a practice agreement with a physician and controlled-substance supply is limited.
For preceptors, the state offers a tax credit plus a deduction under Section 12-6-3800, kept alive through tax year 2029 by a 2024 act. Only rotations for students enrolled at South Carolina's own public or independent colleges count, so a UL Lafayette student's preceptor is outside it. The largest metros are Greenville-Anderson-Greer, then Charleston-North Charleston and Columbia, with part of the Charlotte area crossing in from North Carolina. Lexington Health, Roper St. Francis Healthcare, MUSC Health, McLeod Health and Prisma Health are large providers, named as examples and not as UL Lafayette sites.
The DNP from a South Carolina practice
For a nurse practitioner with an MSN, UL Lafayette's DNP is 39 credits online, starting each Fall with applications due May 1. Residency hours total 420 across three courses numbered NURS 821 to NURS 823, chosen within your specialty and placed in South Carolina or Louisiana. Can I study UL Lafayette's Nursing Education MSN from South Carolina?
Yes, South Carolina is one of eight states UL Lafayette accepts for that concentration. What remains to confirm is where NURS 544 and NURS 557 may take place, because UL Lafayette's pages describe the Louisiana clinical rule differently. Ask the graduate coordinator before you enroll, and read the program guide.
Does South Carolina Regulation 91-6 apply to a UL Lafayette DNP residency?
Regulation 91-6 is written for outside programs running South Carolina clinicals that lead to a first nursing license, and it never mentions APRN or doctoral study. Someone in a post-MSN DNP already holds a license, which may place the residency beyond it, but that reading has not been confirmed. Check with the DNP Coordinator and the South Carolina Board of Nursing.
Can a South Carolina preceptor of a UL Lafayette student use the state tax credit?
The statute rules it out. The credit and deduction reach only rotations for students of the state's own public or independent institutions, and UL Lafayette is a Louisiana university. A preceptor working with one of its students would not qualify, however long the rotation runs.
Is the FNP open to a South Carolina RN?
Not while you live in South Carolina. The state sits on UL Lafayette's not-accepting list for all three NP-track programs, pending a determination about South Carolina's educational requirements. The tracks also hold clinicals inside Louisiana, under a Louisiana RN license, so a move changes the picture.
