A UL Lafayette DNP residency under New Mexico's clinical rules
UL Lafayette takes New Mexico residents into the post-MSN DNP and lets its residency run in New Mexico. New Mexicans cannot enter the FNP, PMHNP or PMHNP certificate, whose clinicals happen only in Louisiana. More than one semester: the NMAC trigger
New Mexico writes its rule down. Under paragraph (A)(2) of 16.12.3.11 NMAC, a program that places students in clinical or field work in New Mexico for longer than one semester must apply to the board for program approval for clinical placement. Approval by a board elsewhere does not excuse a program from New Mexico's minimums in 16.12.3.12.
Now set that beside UL Lafayette's plan. The catalog spreads the residency across three semesters (NURS 821 in the fourth, NURS 822 in the fifth, NURS 823 in the sixth), so keeping all of it in New Mexico would exceed a single semester. Whether the rule reaches a post-MSN residency is less certain, because Part 16.12.3 is framed around education for New Mexico licensure and never singles out APRN programs. UL Lafayette's New Mexico approval status went unchecked in research. Put the question to the DNP Coordinator and the board early.
Full practice, compact licenses and New Mexico's preceptor definition
The New Mexico Board of Nursing licenses the state's RNs and APRNs and issues multistate licenses, New Mexico having been part of the compact since January 19, 2018; it has not enacted the APRN Compact. On AANP's scale, New Mexico sits at full practice.
Precepting has its own definition in the board's education rules. Two years of nursing experience is the floor, and the preceptor's license must equal or outrank the credential the student is pursuing. Outside programs cleared for New Mexico placements answer to those same minimums. No New Mexico preceptor incentive surfaced in research.
The residency and New Mexico's health care map
The program: a 39-credit online doctorate for MSN-prepared nurses, with a Fall cohort and a May 1 application date. Residency totals 420 hours within your specialty area of practice, and New Mexico or Louisiana can host them. Your host agency provides an approved mentor for the Synthesis Project committee, and campus visits come at the start (the DNP Orientation Intensive) and the finish (your presentation). Albuquerque's metro, near 925,000 people, is several times the size of any other in the state; Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington follow. Santa Fe has CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, part of CHRISTUS Health. Elsewhere the main providers include Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Lovelace Health System and the UNM Health System, which operates the one academic medical center in New Mexico. These names sketch the landscape; none should be read as a site that takes UL Lafayette students.

No, not from a New Mexico address. With no determination made on New Mexico's educational requirements, UL Lafayette is not admitting New Mexicans to the PMHNP, the FNP or the PMHNP certificate.
