For a New Jersey nurse practitioner, the UL Lafayette program that fits is the online Doctor of Nursing Practice: New Jersey is on its accepted list, and residency hours can be done in your home state. The MSN nurse practitioner tracks and the PMHNP certificate are not enrolling New Jersey residents. Research also found no New Jersey Board rule governing clinicals by programs based in other states.

Joint protocols, the compact and a crowded map
AANP puts New Jersey in reduced practice. The deciding detail: medications and devices are ordered under joint protocols kept with a collaborating physician. Multistate licenses have worked in New Jersey since mid-November 2021, and the APRN Compact has not been adopted there.
Much of New Jersey's population belongs to metros anchored across its borders: more than seven million residents are part of greater New York (the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro), about 1.4 million in Philadelphia's, and far fewer in the Trenton-Princeton or Atlantic City-Hammonton areas. Big systems include RWJBarnabas, Hackensack Meridian, Atlantic Health, Virtua and Camden's Cooper University Health Care. They are named to picture the state, not as hosts that have agreed to take UL Lafayette students, and research lists no New Jersey preceptor incentive.
What New Jersey's rules say about outside programs
We searched New Jersey's nursing rules for a step, approval or notice, that a program based in another state must take before its students train at New Jersey sites, and found none. The rules that do exist look inward. Subchapter 1 of the Board's rules covers schools that operate under New Jersey Commission on Higher Education licensure and want Board accreditation, and section 1.10(c) concerns New Jersey programs that send their students to agencies in other states.
The Board's website could not be reviewed for posted guidance, so treat the missing rule as unconfirmed rather than settled. Before you commit to New Jersey residency hours, check with UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator and the New Jersey Board.
How the DNP works from Newark, Trenton or Camden
UL Lafayette's post-MSN doctorate totals 39 credits delivered online in fall and spring, one cohort a year starting in Fall, with applications due May 1. Residency is spread over NURS 821, NURS 822 and NURS 823, 420 clock hours in all, in your specialty area of practice and in Louisiana or your home state; the DNP residency guide walks through each course. Two campus visits bracket the program, one for the DNP Orientation Intensive and one to present your Synthesis Project.

Can I study UL Lafayette's PMHNP program from New Jersey?
Not while New Jersey is home. The MSN PMHNP and the PMHNP Post-Master's Certificate both put New Jersey among the states where UL Lafayette has not made a determination and is not taking students. Clinical hours for both happen in Louisiana on a Louisiana RN license. Check eligibility with UL Lafayette's online programs office before any move.
Does New Jersey need to approve my DNP residency hours?
In short, nothing located so far obliges a program from outside the state to get New Jersey approval or file notice ahead of clinical use of New Jersey sites. The Board's online guidance, however, went unreviewed. Ask the New Jersey Board of Nursing and UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator before your first residency semester.
What license does UL Lafayette's DNP ask for?
The catalog program page calls for a current, unencumbered U.S. RN license and, for post-MSN applicants, an unencumbered U.S. APRN nurse practitioner license. Ahead of the residency courses, UL Lafayette also requires background checks, drug and alcohol screens and its health requirements, all at your own expense. How many practice hours does the DNP require overall?
The doctorate asks for 1,000 supervised practice hours after the baccalaureate, with the 420 residency hours counted in that total and hours from your MSN applied toward it. Anyone who needs additional residency hours also registers for NURS 809, NURS 810, NURS 811 or NURS 812 with the DNP Coordinator's permission.
