A Michigan license, a Louisiana school: what fits
If you are a nurse practitioner in Michigan with a master's, UL Lafayette's DNP is open to you, and its residency can be logged in Michigan within your specialty. The FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate have no opening for Michigan residents right now, because each of those tracks puts every clinical hour in Louisiana under a Louisiana RN license.

Michigan's standing with each UL Lafayette program
Every online program keeps its own state list on UL Lafayette's state authorization page. For Michigan, the September 2026 page reads:

A single-state license, with a compact bill pending
Michigan stands apart from the Nurse Licensure Compact. HB 4246, a bill to bring it in, appeared as pending on the compact's map, yet as things stand a Michigan RN license is honored in Michigan and nowhere else. For the DNP, whose catalog entry wants an unencumbered RN license, current, from wherever in the U.S. you hold it, that barely matters. For a Michigan nurse eyeing Louisiana it matters a lot: UL Lafayette's MSN clinicals call for a Louisiana RN license, and Michigan's single-state license cannot fill that role. No APRN Compact law exists in Michigan yet. AANP labels its practice environment restricted, since a physician must delegate before an NP there prescribes controlled substances. Michigan's NP specialty certification requires national certification through an organization the board accepts, plus a Michigan RN license that is current. When you vet a Michigan NP as your residency mentor, that pairing is a handy thing to check.
Nothing to file in Michigan, as far as research found
Research turned up no Michigan Board of Nursing rule, and no guidance either, that has an out-of-state program seek permission or file notice ahead of Michigan clinicals. Michigan's approval rules for nursing programs, and the board's education-programs web page, concern schools located in the state. When a graduate of an outside program seeks a Michigan license, the program counts through accreditation by ACEN, CNEA or CCNE instead of board approval.
Nobody from research contacted the board, and whether UL Lafayette sits on any Michigan list went unchecked. Raise both points with the DNP Coordinator, and with the board, ahead of any site decision.
Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint
Metro Detroit, about 4.4 million people, is by far the largest; Grand Rapids passes 1.1 million, and Lansing-East Lansing and Flint each hold between 400,000 and 480,000. Henry Ford Health ranks with McLaren Health Care among the biggest systems. Trinity Health Michigan belongs on that list too, as do Corewell Health and University of Michigan Health. They appear here as a picture of the market, not as sites for UL Lafayette students.
Research found one Michigan preceptor incentive, and it is over: the MDHHS nursing programs office piloted one with MSU's College of Nursing, limited to preceptors working with MSU's own NP students. Research found no preceptor tax credit on Michigan's books.
A Fall cohort, a May 1 deadline, a Michigan residency
Plan on 39 credits, a Fall start and a May 1 deadline. Residency runs through NURS 821, NURS 822 and NURS 823 for 420 clock hours, each tied to your specialty area of practice; UL Lafayette says those hours can happen in your home state or in Louisiana. The program's 1,000-hour post-baccalaureate practice total includes them.
Lafayette itself sees you twice, for the DNP Orientation Intensive just before the program opens and again when you present your Synthesis Project. Questions UL Lafayette students ask
Is the online FNP an option for a Michigan RN?
Not from a Michigan address. Michigan appears on the not-accepting list for all three NP tracks, meaning UL Lafayette has made no call on Michigan's educational requirements. Those tracks also need Louisiana clinicals and a Louisiana RN license, and a single-state Michigan license cannot supply the second.
Will Michigan enter the nurse compact?
Possibly. Research saw HB 4246, a bill to join, marked pending on the compact's map, but Michigan was not yet a member. Until that changes, Michigan-issued RN licenses stay single-state. The DNP only asks that your RN license be current, unencumbered and issued somewhere in the U.S., so this is no obstacle there; confirm your own case before applying.
Can my Michigan preceptor get a state incentive?
Research found nothing open to preceptors of out-of-state students. The MDHHS pilot run with MSU's College of Nursing was limited to MSU's own NP students, and it is finished. Michigan has enacted no preceptor tax credit that research could find.
Do I need Michigan board approval before my residency?
Research found no Michigan requirement that an outside program get approval or give notice before clinicals, though the board itself was not asked. Its program-approval rules are about schools based in Michigan. Ask UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator how a Michigan residency is set up, and check with the board if your site raises the question.
