Maine appears on both DNP listings, so the conflict hanging over six other states passes you by.
Licenses, practice rules and care in Maine
Multistate licenses have been valid in Maine under the Nurse Licensure Compact since January 2018, and Louisiana's own start date was July 1, 2019, so a Maine multistate RN license already reaches Louisiana. UL Lafayette words its license rule differently from page to page; the RN license guide compares the versions.
AANP's practice map shows Maine as full practice. The hurdle for new NPs is a 24-month minimum of supervised work under a physician or an NP, unless the clinic or hospital employing them has a physician medical director. Our research found no Maine incentive program for preceptors.
Portland-South Portland is the biggest metro by far, and Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn complete the list. Much of the state's care flows through Northern Light Health and MaineHealth, with Central Maine Healthcare and MaineGeneral Health also prominent. They picture the state for you; none is named here as a site for UL Lafayette students.
Maine's board and an out-of-state DNP residency
As far as our research found, nothing the Maine State Board of Nursing publishes speaks to outside schools placing students in Maine clinical settings. Its Chapter 7 regulations concern approval of prelicensure programs within Maine. The licensure exemption in 32 MRSA §2103(2) covers students of board-approved programs on the way to their initial license, so it was not drafted with a licensed NP pursuing a post-MSN doctorate in mind.
A missing rule is not a written approval. Before you settle on a Maine agency, ask UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator and the Maine board how a residency here is treated.
Your UL Lafayette options from Maine
UL Lafayette designed its DNP for nurses who finished an MSN first: 39 credits, one Fall cohort a year and a May 1 application deadline. Its residency totals 420 hours over NURS 821, NURS 822 and NURS 823, set in your specialty area of practice, and UL Lafayette says those hours can be completed in Louisiana or your home state. Plan on two trips to Lafayette, for the DNP Orientation Intensive and the closing Synthesis Project presentation. The DNP program page covers admission.
The MSN and certificate NP tracks open up only after a move south, since UL Lafayette keeps their clinicals inside Louisiana (Louisiana-only clinicals).

Can a Maine resident enroll in UL Lafayette's online FNP?
Not while living in Maine. UL Lafayette has made no determination for Maine on the FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate and is not taking students from states in that group. Those programs also hold every rotation in Louisiana under a Louisiana RN license. A nurse who relocates would apply as a Louisiana resident.
Does my Maine compact license work for UL Lafayette?
For the DNP, which requires a U.S. RN license that is unencumbered and, after an MSN, a U.S. APRN nurse practitioner license, a Maine license fits the wording. For the MSN, sources disagree: the catalog accepts a Louisiana or multistate license, while the online page wants proof of Louisiana residency alongside a multistate one.
Could my DNP residency be in Bangor or Portland?
Yes, if UL Lafayette approves the agency, mentor and project: DNP hours can be completed in Louisiana or your home state, within your specialty area of practice, and the agency's approved mentor joins your project committee. Maine has published no out-of-state placement rule, so confirm with the board and the DNP Coordinator.
Can I take UL Lafayette's Nursing Education MSN from Maine?
Not from a Maine address. That concentration enrolls residents of Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia only. Its practicums, NURS 544 and NURS 557, total 240 hours in the catalog, while an older web page says 300.
