West Virginia made UL Lafayette's eight-state short list for the Nursing Education concentration of the online MSN, and nurse practitioners in the state can also apply to the post-MSN DNP. The family and psychiatric NP tracks, along with the PMHNP certificate, are closed to West Virginia residents for now and hold all clinical work in Louisiana.

Teaching practicums and where they could happen

Plan on four semesters online and between 40 and 43 credits. Precepted time lives in two courses: the one-credit NURS 544 advanced clinical practicum, 60 hours at minimum, and the three-credit NURS 557 Nursing Education Practicum, 180 hours at minimum, with preceptors in class, lab and clinical settings. Together that is 240 by the 2026-27 catalog; an older web page claims 300, so go with the catalog.

Location is the open item for a West Virginian. UL Lafayette's MSN overview sends every concentration's clinical experiences to Louisiana, while its How to Apply page mentions the Louisiana rule only under the FNP. Ask the graduate coordinator where your two practicums may run, and keep the reply in writing. The concentration guide and the practicum page explain both courses.

Two offices share oversight of clinicals in West Virginia

RN licensure in West Virginia sits with the Board of Registered Nurses (LPNs have a board of their own), and its program approvals cover pre-licensure schooling only. Its out-of-state approval form targets outside programs leading to an initial license, which a UL Lafayette MSN or DNP does not. Graduate programs are told to take clinical placement questions to their national accreditor and to WVHEPC, the Higher Education Policy Commission.

According to WVHEPC's nursing education office, a graduate or APRN program from outside the state needs commission approval for West Virginia clinicals in just two cases: its school is not part of NC-SARA, or a single site would host ten students or more from it.
Its clinical rotation guide keys the license to residence. If West Virginia is your primary state, graduate clinicals there call for a West Virginia RN license; if you are based somewhere else, a multistate RN license does the job.

UL Lafayette's authorization page describes the university as an NC-SARA member. How these rules treat a UL Lafayette practicum or residency, and whether the university appears on any West Virginia list, went unverified in research, so confirm with the DNP Coordinator or graduate coordinator and with WVHEPC.

Collaborative prescribing and the state's large systems

Multistate RN licensing arrived in West Virginia at the start of 2018; the APRN Compact has yet to be adopted there. AANP files the state under reduced practice, and two details stand out: prescriptive authority rests on a physician collaborative agreement through an NP's first three years, and any Schedule II narcotic script is held to three days' worth.

Population centers run small: Charleston, Huntington (its metro spills into Kentucky and Ohio), Morgantown, and the West Virginia half of the Hagerstown-Martinsburg area. Vandalia Health, parent system to Davis Health, CAMC and Mon Health, stands beside WVU Medicine and the Marshall Health Network as a major provider. They are examples of the landscape, not sites tied to UL Lafayette, and research turned up no West Virginia preceptor incentive.

Can I complete UL Lafayette's Nursing Education practicums in West Virginia?

That is unconfirmed. One UL Lafayette page keeps all MSN clinical work in Louisiana, and another applies the Louisiana rule only to the FNP. Because West Virginia is on the Nursing Education list, the answer matters to you: get the graduate coordinator's ruling before mapping either practicum close to home.

Which license do I need for graduate clinicals in West Virginia?

The state's nursing education office answers by primary residence: a West Virginia RN license if you live in the state, a multistate RN license if your home is in another one. UL Lafayette layers its own license rules on top for each program, laid out in the license guide.

Does the West Virginia RN Board approve out-of-state DNP programs?

The board oversees pre-licensure education only, so graduate programs have no approval step with it. WVHEPC's approval, in turn, applies only to schools outside NC-SARA or to heavy use of one site. Confirm how that reads for UL Lafayette with the DNP Coordinator.

Is UL Lafayette's online FNP open to West Virginia nurses?

Not right now. For all three NP programs, UL Lafayette places West Virginia in its not-accepting group while no determination exists about the state's educational requirements.
