How a Nebraska nurse fits into UL Lafayette's online programs
Nebraska appears on the accepted side of UL Lafayette's DNP list, so a Nebraska nurse practitioner can apply to the post-MSN doctorate and keep residency hours near home. The family and psychiatric NP concentrations, plus the PMHNP certificate, stay closed to Nebraskans because their clinical calendar is spent entirely in Louisiana.

One board for RNs and, it seems, now for APRNs too
Nurse licensing in Nebraska runs through DHHS, whose Division of Public Health houses a Licensure Unit, and the Board of Nursing works from inside it. One change matters if you hold APRN licensure. The APRN board is on DHHS member lists into June 2026 and missing from both later 2026 lists, dated in July and September, where APRN, CNS and CNM seats now show up on the Board of Nursing with terms from July 1, 2026. A fold-in looks likely, yet research located no statute saying so, so confirm which board now handles your APRN matters.
Nebraska RNs got multistate privileges in the compact's January 2018 rollout, while APRNs have no compact of their own in the state. On AANP's scale Nebraska is full practice, after a 2,000-hour transition under a supervising provider for NPs who are starting out.
Why Nebraska adds no approval step for a DNP residency
What the Nebraska board approves is pre-licensure education aimed at Nebraska residents; an NCLEX-bound program with students in Nebraska should contact the board and may need approval. A UL Lafayette DNP student already holds a nursing license, and DHHS says the board does not regulate post-licensure programs in any format, so on DHHS's description a Nebraska residency meets no board approval step.
- Practice is where you stand. Following NCSBN guidance, DHHS treats student practice as happening wherever the student physically is and wants faculty licensed in that same state, which for APRN-level instructors means a Nebraska APRN license.
- The school writes the preceptor bar. With post-licensure programs, DHHS lets the nursing program decide who qualifies to precept, so the standards for your mentor are UL Lafayette's.
Research did not settle how the faculty point applies to UL Lafayette's DNP faculty, or whether the university shows up on any Nebraska list. The DNP Coordinator, and DHHS if needed, can answer both before you settle on a site.
Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island
Greater Omaha, which spills into Iowa, is the largest metro; Lincoln comes next, then Grand Island well behind. A Nebraska nurse will know Bryan Health and Children's Nebraska, CHI Health, Nebraska Medicine and the Methodist system. Listing them paints the state and says nothing about UL Lafayette placements, and research turned up no Nebraska preceptor incentive.
Planning the DNP from Nebraska
Applications are due May 1 for a cohort that starts each Fall, and the program totals 39 credits. Residency I, II and III carry the practice load, 420 hours between them, and UL Lafayette's DNP page lets you complete them in Nebraska or Louisiana, within your specialty. A host-agency mentor, once approved by UL Lafayette, joins your project committee, and NURS 822 is the course where the intervention is implemented.

Does Nebraska have to approve UL Lafayette before I log residency hours there?
On DHHS's description, no. The board's approval work stops at pre-licensure programs, and a program serving nurses who are already licensed falls outside its regulation, whether taught online or on site. Nobody in research looked for UL Lafayette on a Nebraska list, so run the plan past the DNP Coordinator before choosing a site.
Who decides whether my Nebraska mentor qualifies?
UL Lafayette's rules decide. For programs beyond licensure, DHHS lets the school itself set who may precept, and the university seats your host-agency mentor on the project committee only after approval. Your placement advisor measures a candidate against UL Lafayette's expectations before a name goes forward.
Is UL Lafayette's online PMHNP open to Nebraska residents?
No. With no determination on file for Nebraska, UL Lafayette is not accepting the state's residents into its PMHNP or FNP tracks or the PMHNP certificate, and each keeps its rotations in Louisiana. The certificate also calls for a Louisiana APRN license, as the license guide explains.
Would my UL Lafayette faculty need a Nebraska license?
Nebraska's guidance asks faculty to hold licensure where the student practices, and APRN-level instructors to hold a Nebraska APRN license. Whether a post-MSN DNP, whose students are already licensed nurse practitioners, falls under that is not spelled out in what research found. The DNP Coordinator is the one to ask.
