What a Minnesota nurse can take from UL Lafayette
UL Lafayette states that its FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate tracks do not meet Minnesota's educational requirements, so none leads toward a Minnesota NP license. Minnesota is on the DNP's accepted list, though, and that post-MSN doctorate, with residency hours near home, is the place for a Minnesota nurse practitioner to start.

Three states get a firmer answer, and Minnesota is one
UL Lafayette sorts states program by program on its state authorization page. Most states get a neutral not-accepting mark for the nurse practitioner tracks; Minnesota, Tennessee and Washington get a firmer one, that the tracks do not meet their educational requirements. As of September 2026, Minnesota's row reads:

Reading the does-not-meet mark as a Minnesota nurse
The mark is a licensing statement, not a verdict on you. It tells a Minnesota RN that the FNP or PMHNP here would not line up with Minnesota's educational expectations for an NP applicant.
Two situations do fit. A Minnesota nurse practitioner with a master's can apply to the post-MSN DNP. A nurse planning an actual move to Louisiana should know that Minnesota is not a compact member, which leaves its RN license valid in Minnesota alone, and MSN clinicals require a Louisiana RN license. The license guide sorts out UL Lafayette's wording.
How the Minnesota Board of Nursing treats outside programs
The Minnesota Board of Nursing licenses the state's nurses and approves programs run inside Minnesota. No compact bill is pending there, according to the compact's state map, and Minnesota has left the APRN Compact alone too. AANP gives the state its full practice label, with one condition for new NPs: 2,080 hours first, worked inside a collaborative agreement, whether with a physician or with an APRN.
Two provisions a residency could touch
- Minn. R. 6305.0300, subpart 1, accepts for the student exemption a program that its own state, or its own Canadian province, has approved. What Minnesota adds is a licensed supervisor: the instructor overseeing the student holds a Minnesota RN license, currently registered.
- Minn. Stat. 148.271(6) sets aside the Minnesota license requirement for an out-of-state RN enrolled in structured study toward a higher credential, covering only practice done inside that study.
Research found no separate approval filing for programs based elsewhere and did not check whether UL Lafayette appears on any Minnesota list. Share your residency plan with the DNP Coordinator and the board before you pick a site.
Minnesota sites often ask for more than the statute
Large systems write their own terms for visiting students. Mayo Clinic's NP clinical education program, for instance, starts from a signed affiliation agreement with the student's own program. It expects the student to carry Minnesota licensure, with no encumbrances and registration current, and to clear a Minnesota DHS background study, and it wants the faculty member of record licensed where the experience is held. Those are site rules, stricter than the law.
MERC, a Minnesota Department of Health program, helps Minnesota sites with training costs rather than rewarding preceptors, and it requires the accredited program itself to be in Minnesota. Care across the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, Rochester and Duluth involves many systems: Mayo Clinic is one, and Allina Health, HealthPartners, M Health Fairview and Essentia Health are others. They sketch the landscape and are not sites tied to UL Lafayette.

Can I become a Minnesota NP through UL Lafayette's online FNP?
No. UL Lafayette says those tracks do not meet Minnesota's educational requirements, and all three keep every clinical hour in Louisiana under a Louisiana RN license. For NP licensure at home, choose a program that meets Minnesota's rules; an NP who already holds a master's can look at the DNP.
Does my Minnesota RN license reach Louisiana?
Not by itself. Minnesota holds no compact membership, so a Minnesota RN license is good only at home. UL Lafayette's MSN clinicals need a Louisiana RN license. The DNP's catalog entry wants your RN license current and unencumbered, from any U.S. state, which a Minnesota license can meet.
Will a Minnesota residency site need an agreement with UL Lafayette?
Expect it at larger systems. Mayo Clinic's NP clinical education program, for one, requires Mayo and your school to sign an affiliation agreement before anything starts. Could my Minnesota site draw MERC funds for my hours?
No. MERC helps Minnesota training sites only when the accredited teaching program is itself in Minnesota, and UL Lafayette's is in Louisiana. That touches the site's funding alone, not whether the site can host your residency.
