Kentucky residency hours toward a UL Lafayette doctorate
UL Lafayette accepts Kentucky residents for its post-MSN DNP, whose residency can be completed in Kentucky or Louisiana. Kentuckians cannot currently enter the FNP, PMHNP or PMHNP certificate, because those tracks do their clinical work only in Louisiana. Kentucky's board has published a direct statement on programs from other states, and it shapes who can mentor you.

KBN's position on programs from other states
Kentucky's board draws a clear line for a UL Lafayette doctoral student: when the school is based elsewhere, program approval is not KBN's business. KBN approves and regulates prelicensure programs born in Kentucky. A Louisiana program with nothing in Kentucky except a clinical piece needs no KBN sign-off, by KBN's own published statement. RN-BSN study is outside its reach, and on the graduate side it claims only programs that end in licensure.
Where KBN does set conditions
- Clinical faculty: for an online MSN or DNP preparing APRNs, whoever supervises the students on Kentucky ground holds Kentucky RN and APRN licenses, both active and unencumbered. Living in a different compact state trims that to the Kentucky APRN license.
- Preceptors: the same pair of Kentucky licenses applies to anyone precepting those students in Kentucky.
- Visiting nurses: KBN cites KRS 314.101, an exemption for a nurse licensed in another state who rotates through Kentucky, when the school is part of SARA or carries a Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education license.
UL Lafayette's page says it belongs to NC-SARA. Research did not test how KBN would treat a UL Lafayette DNP residency under these rules, so bring the question to the DNP Coordinator and to KBN before you commit to a Kentucky site.
Two physician agreements and a first-year rule for Kentucky NPs
A Kentucky RN license issued as multistate has worked in Louisiana since January 19, 2018, when the compact took effect for Kentucky. The APRN Compact is another story, with no Kentucky enactment. AANP's label for Kentucky is reduced practice, and prescribing is why: unless the board exempts them, qualifying NPs there prescribe controlled and non-controlled drugs only under two physician agreements. First-year licensees also face rules about the settings where they may be employed.
Louisville/Jefferson County is the biggest metro touching Kentucky, with part of it in Indiana, and Lexington-Fayette is second. Northern Kentucky belongs to the Cincinnati metro, and Bowling Green rounds out the four. Care there runs through systems like Norton Healthcare and UofL Health, plus UK HealthCare, St. Elizabeth Healthcare and a Baptist Health network spanning Kentucky and southern Indiana; think of them as landscape, not as UL Lafayette sites. Research found no Kentucky preceptor incentive.

Is KBN approval needed before a UL Lafayette residency in Kentucky?
Not by KBN's own account. It publishes that programs based in other states are neither approved by it nor required to be, and that holds when a program's Kentucky activity is only clinical. The licensure conditions on faculty and preceptors still bite, so the people in your residency plan matter as much as the site.
Does my Kentucky DNP mentor need a Kentucky APRN license?
Maybe. KBN's licensure condition covers preceptors in Kentucky for online APRN-preparing MSN and DNP programs: a Kentucky RN license plus a Kentucky APRN license, both active and unencumbered. Whether an agency mentor for a post-MSN Synthesis Project counts as that kind of preceptor is for the DNP Coordinator and KBN to say.
What is the SARA exemption KBN mentions?
It is KRS 314.101. KBN reads it as excusing a nurse from another state who completes a Kentucky clinical rotation, so long as the school holds SARA membership or a Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education license. UL Lafayette's authorization page says it is an NC-SARA member; ask how that applies to your residency.
Can I enter UL Lafayette's FNP while living in Kentucky?
Not from Kentucky. With no determination made on Kentucky's educational requirements, UL Lafayette is not taking Kentucky residents into the FNP, PMHNP or PMHNP certificate. Those tracks run their clinicals in Louisiana and expect a Louisiana RN license; the license guide covers the wording for anyone planning a move.
