Idaho's board and its reach over outside programs

Nurse licensing in Idaho belongs to the Board of Nursing, which DOPL houses. Idaho entered the Nurse Licensure Compact in January 2018 but has not taken up the APRN Compact, and AANP rates its NP practice environment as full.

Idaho rules that could touch a residency

Program approval: the board's approval rule and the statute behind it cover programs offered inside Idaho, and neither addresses a school elsewhere sending students to Idaho clinics. For those schools, the board's web page simply names its licensing office as the contact.
Student practice: an Idaho rule lets a registered nurse licensed in Idaho, or working there on a compact privilege, carry out APRN work while matriculated in a nationally accredited APRN program, as long as that work is an integral part of the curriculum. A statute separately exempts students of approved programs for tasks tied to their instruction.
Preceptors and faculty: under the board's 2024 education policy, a preceptor's license must match or exceed the level the learner is headed for. Anyone teaching nursing courses needs Idaho RN licensure, and faculty chiefly responsible for APRN role or population courses need Idaho APRN licensure as well.

Those provisions were drafted around programs that lead to licensure, and a post-MSN residency sits in less charted ground. Ask the DNP Coordinator and the Idaho board how they apply before you commit to an Idaho site.

Where Idaho's care is concentrated

Boise City's metro dwarfs every other in Idaho; Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls follow at a distance. Among the state's larger providers are St. Luke's, Saint Alphonsus and, in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Health. They illustrate the landscape and are not sites connected to UL Lafayette.
