A compact newcomer with a long road to full practice
October 1, 2025 is the date Connecticut switched on compact participation, which makes it one of the newest members. Connecticut's Department of Public Health now lets an RN student practice there with either an in-state license or a multistate one issued by the student's compact home. Louisiana has belonged since 2019, a plus for any Connecticut nurse thinking about Lafayette; our RN license page compares how UL Lafayette words its license rule.
Full practice arrives slowly for Connecticut NPs, per AANP: first comes a physician collaboration lasting at least three years and 2,000 hours. Connecticut has not enacted the APRN Compact.
Deemed approval and Connecticut's clinical rules
Connecticut regulates nurses through its Board of Examiners for Nursing, part of the state health department. Regulation 20-90-59 gives a program from elsewhere deemed-approved status when its own state board has approved it, its curriculum meets Connecticut's RN rule, and its home state's licensure bar is at least as high; no extra filing appears in the text. Clinical work in Connecticut agencies still follows local written-contract rules and ratios, such as two students at most for each preceptor and up to sixteen precepted students for each faculty member.
When the student is at an advanced level in an RN education program, the preceptor needs two things beyond a bachelor's in nursing: an active RN license from Connecticut or the state where the teaching happens, and a minimum of two years in that role or specialty. All of this is drafted for programs leading to licensure and says nothing specific about post-licensure or APRN study, so ask UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator how it touches a DNP residency.
Health systems and metros across the state
Hartford's metro holds the most people, the Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury area sits close behind, and New Haven and Waterbury-Shelton round out the top four. Hospital care is led by Yale New Haven Health and Hartford HealthCare, with UConn Health and Trinity Health Of New England also prominent, while New York's Northwell Health took over Danbury Hospital and the rest of the old Nuvance group in the west. Questions UL Lafayette students ask
Can I study UL Lafayette's PMHNP program from Connecticut?
Not from a Connecticut address. UL Lafayette counts Connecticut among the states where it has not reached a determination for the MSN PMHNP, the FNP and the PMHNP certificate, and it is not enrolling students from that group. Those tracks also keep all clinical rotations in Louisiana and require a Louisiana RN license.
Does Connecticut's new compact membership help with UL Lafayette's MSN?
It gives a Connecticut resident access to a multistate license that Louisiana recognizes. UL Lafayette's pages disagree on what they accept, though: the catalog allows a Louisiana or multistate RN license, the online MSN page adds proof of Louisiana residency, and the state authorization page names a Louisiana license for NP clinicals. Confirm with the graduate coordinator before relying on it.
Do Connecticut's preceptor ratios apply to a DNP residency?
Connecticut's two-students-per-preceptor limit sits in regulations aimed at programs that prepare graduates for licensure. UL Lafayette's post-MSN DNP prepares no new license, so the fit is unclear. Louisiana's Board sets its own two-student cap for graduate APRN students precepted in Louisiana. Ask the DNP Coordinator which rules govern your residency.
Will residency hours in Connecticut count toward the DNP's 1,000-hour total?
UL Lafayette's DNP requires 1,000 post-baccalaureate supervised practice hours overall, and MSN hours count toward it. The residency courses add at least 420, and students who need more enroll in NURS 809 through 812 with the DNP Coordinator's permission. UL Lafayette says residency hours may be done in Louisiana or in your home state.
