Earning a UL Lafayette nursing doctorate from Alaska
Alaska nurses who already hold an MSN can pursue UL Lafayette's Doctor of Nursing Practice and keep their residency close to home, because the DNP lets those hours happen in a student's own state. The nurse practitioner programs work differently: they are not enrolling Alaska residents, and every one of their clinical hours takes place in Louisiana. No compact, full practice and a registration for each student
Alaska has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact. Two compact bills were still pending in the 2025-2026 legislature, according to the Board of Nursing, so an Alaska RN license works in Alaska alone; the APRN Compact is not law there either. On practice authority, AANP puts Alaska in its full practice group.
Alaska's rule lands on the individual student rather than the school. APRN students whose programs are based outside the state register a preceptorship with the Board (12 AAC 44.460), using the APRN Preceptorship Registration, form 08-4253, which has its own non-refundable fee. The Board wants to see a current RN license from Alaska or elsewhere with no problems on it, evidence of active APRN enrollment, and the written arrangement that school, facility, student and preceptor have all signed. One registration lasts up to 12 months, or less if the preceptorship wraps up first, and one renewal is allowed.
Because UL Lafayette's DNP is post-MSN and prepares no new license, ask the DNP Coordinator and the Board whether this registration reaches your residency.
Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and the systems between
Greater Anchorage holds most of the state's people, Fairbanks-College is a far smaller metro, and Juneau counts as micropolitan. Anchorage is home to the tribal Alaska Native Medical Center, HCA's Alaska Regional Hospital and Providence Alaska Medical Center, which belongs to the biggest hospital operator in the state. Up the road in Palmer sits Mat-Su Regional, while Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Tanana Valley Clinic operate under Foundation Health Partners. These names picture the state; none is presented as a place that takes UL Lafayette students.
Planning a UL Lafayette DNP around Alaska distances
The DNP is a 39-credit post-MSN program that admits one Fall cohort, with applications due May 1. Its 420 residency hours across NURS 821, NURS 822 and NURS 823 sit in your specialty area of practice, and UL Lafayette accepts them in Louisiana or in your home state. Only two moments need you on campus: the DNP Orientation Intensive before classes and the Synthesis Project presentation at the end, so an Alaska student can book both trips well ahead. Can an Alaska nurse enroll in UL Lafayette's online FNP or PMHNP?
Not while living in Alaska. UL Lafayette groups Alaska with the states where it has made no determination for the FNP, PMHNP and PMHNP certificate, and it is not enrolling students from that group. Those programs also hold every rotation in Louisiana under a Louisiana RN license. The post-MSN DNP is the UL Lafayette nursing program that does accept Alaska residents.
Does Alaska's APRN preceptorship registration cover a DNP residency?
Alaska's registration is written for students of an APRN course of study run from outside the state. UL Lafayette's post-MSN DNP serves nurses who already hold advanced credentials and leads to no new license, so how the rule treats it is unsettled. Raise the question with UL Lafayette's DNP Coordinator and the Alaska Board of Nursing before your first residency course.
Would I need a Louisiana license to move there for the MSN?
Plan on one. Alaska is not a compact state and issues only single-state licenses. UL Lafayette's state authorization page ties NP clinicals to a Louisiana RN license, while the catalog also accepts a multistate license and the online MSN page adds proof of Louisiana residency. Who can precept an APRN student in Alaska?
Alaska wants the preceptor to be a licensed APRN or physician, or someone holding a privilege to practice as one, with no restrictions on that license and a practice focus close to the student's. That person supervises, teaches and evaluates on site. UL Lafayette's DNP adds its own expectation of an approved mentor from the agency where you plan to carry out your project.
